Hello,

I'm curious if anyone out there has any experience coming over from the US as a CPA. It seems the equivalent in New Zealand is a Chartered Accountant. I'm trying to figure out how long it would take me to become a Chartered Accountant. Any thoughts?

I emailed the NZIA and was told:

"We will need to assess your academic qualifications in order to advise you on any further study required to meet the Institute's academic requirements.
There are four entry components to be completed before an applicant can be admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand:
Academic study
Practical experience
Professional competence exams
Good character and reputation

As a minimum, to meet the Institute's academic requirements for the Chartered Accountants College you will be required to complete the following compulsory topics:
New Zealand commercial law (including the foundations of business law, contract law and the law of entity structure) New Zealand taxation

You may wish to enrol in these topics before the assessment of your application is completed. A list of the approved tertiary institutions at which these topics can be completed is available on our website.

Please be aware that the topics must be completed at bachelor degree level to be recognised towards the academic requirements of the College of Chartered Accountants.

PLEASE NOTE THAT BEFORE YOU APPLY FOR THE ABOVE ASSESSMENT, YOU WILL NEED TO ATTAIN AN ASSESSMENT REPORT FROM THE NZ QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY (NZQA). ONCE YOU RECEIVE YOUR NZQA RESULT, PLEASE ATTACH THIS WITH YOUR NZICA APPLICATION AND FORWARD TO NZICA."

Thanks,
