Once we are there, will my father need a medical to visit? he is 85 and takes a few pills to thin blood and mild diabetes (like most 85 year olds) but is pretty fit

Medicals are only for people applying for residence, so if your dad is just coming on holiday there is no problem!

My 77 years old MIL and my 83 years old grandma have been stayed with us in NZ. From our experiences, I would suggest your father bring his letter from Dr describe the medications he is taking, how much he taking etc, just in case he lost his or ran out during stay here. My MIL did ran out of medications (during her 6months stay!!) and with list from her GP, our GP was able to find similar one because her usual medications wasn't available in NZ. Also suggest to get medical insurance as well http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12564&highlight=medical+insurance
