Guthrie Bowron has an excellent range of fabric but I don't know whether they are in Auckland.

Harvey furnishings is another option... they sell fabric as well as ready made curtains/blinds etc.

Also have a look on Trademe....

Martha's in Newmarket is excellent. Some beautiful textiles not available elsewhere, and you can order sample swatches online.

Sophia.....do you think you would be able to give me some advice with curtain making next year? We were hoping to make our own to save money, but all I have ever done before is unlined tab top ones.....haven't got a clue where to start with lined curtains...but I do have a sewing machine :)

Are Roman blinds hard to make? We have seen some 'kits' to use where you just buy your own fabric....but it looked rather complicated :uhoh

No problems, I have done lots of curtains making when live in UK. Just I haven't done any in NZ yet...I am so desperate to redecorate but while kids is young, I won't yet. OH brought me brand new sewing machine for christmas :) after my old pack up just before christmas :wah
Roman Blind is one I haven't done yet but I have ordered book from Amazon.co.uk, just waiting to turn up so I can work out first before I could start. Pattern curtains is tricky one I ever done.....

We were quoted nearly $5000 for new curtains for our home - decided that was out the question - so found the curtaining I had liked and got sewing. They are thermal lined - so dont have to make them with lining - which is much easier - so bought 55 meters of material and made mine myself for about $1200. Worth making if you can - as we had many quotes and they were all about the same price.

I, we have to get our men to take our six children off for walk around the paddocks or off to cafe to get some peace to do curtains :laugh

My Mum is fantastic at making all sorts of curtains and blinds - looks like I am going to have to pick her brains and get some hints and tips before I come out. I've made a couple of lined pairs with her in the past, but can't remember all the little 'tried and tested' methods that she used. I have some super fabric which I want to turn into kitchen curtains once I get over as it reminds me of my Dunedin hen Mum and Dad bought me back as a gift 5 years ago.

I'm much better at making clothes. Fingers crossed I can find loads of fabric shops as in the UK they are all seem to be closing down.

Oh that's great to know. It's got so desperate for me that I have been making reconstructions out of mine and OH's old clothes - might still do that though, but would prefer lots of pretty, pink, girly fabrics (I have very girly, girls!). Somehow OH never wears anything very pink and girly for me to cut up once it's worn out :p

This may be a silly question, but roughly how much (per metre) does it cost in NZ for say semi decent fabric for curtain making etc? I'm just wondering if it's worth my while buying some in Scotland to bring over... or whether I should just get it over there, as it seems plentiful??

Cheers
