Dont Panic....!
I am not giving up my immigration fight just yet and bailing out! :p
I was genuinely thinking of taking a two week trip back home to Blighty for Christmas (as quite honestly i didn't enjoy last Xmas here) and i had been thinking it over for weeks and my idea was that its 6mths away and would probably only cost about $2000 i had expected, so i could save that over 6mths as friends/family would feed me and home me in UK so only expense would be flights.
Then i had a search a few airlines, and cheapest flights (return) i could find was $3400  OMG!
So any ideas on cheaper flights (especially over Xmas period) or where to get them, or is that above the most likely going rate? And i wasnt planning on booking it for another 3-4 months so will it go up or down in that time? (i suspect up!)
Maybe my hope of spending Xmas with the Family is not to be :wah
PS: Of course all depends on my current immigration process anyhow as still on temp visas

I know Lee, not fair is it? I priced some up for my folks and they were coming in around £770/$1925 from UK.

Know the feeling!
We cant afford to go back to UK either........... Parents in law and SIL hope to come out just after Chrsitmas for a month and they are looking at £3500 with Air NZ, asthey need the transfer down here to Napier, so easier to go with Air NZ all the journey.
God knoww when we will ever get back to the UK at these prices!

We had the same problem in reverse last year, going to NZ for August (European holiday season) - all flights packed out, and prices sky-high.

Hi
If you check out House of Travel's website - you can get flights with Dubai Airlines for $2800.
Your best bet though is to have a belated Chrissy with your family. Most airlines prices drop after the 20th Jan approx. as holiday period over, kids are heading back to school etc.
You'll get far better prices then.
Good luck!!

Save your pennies (cents) we've got a spare room, come stay in H-Town with the Waikato crew. We can have a great time.
Petrol to Hamilton & back - $200
Accommodation - free
Family christmas with kids, mates, turkey, crackers, tree, lights and James Bond movies - priceless.

My parents are coming for Christmas and their flights were €2000 ($4000) each. When I told people this they've aske are they flying business class! They were the cheapest flights they could find (with air NZ) and they're not even from Dublin, they're flying from London and had to pay extra for cheapy flights to Heathrow. Lucky for them they can pay for it but when I think of all the things I could do with $8000 it makes me sick! I think if I go back home for a trip while I'm here it'll have to be completely off peak. I can't see any other way we can afford it.

The recent flight hike is likely to be due to the increase in fuel - if you think it could go down in a few months it might be worth hanging on and hoping flights will come down too. If you think it could go up - book it now!
I've got to go back to the UK twice in the next year, having just got back from a trip home a week ago, and I'm chosing to delay booking in the hopes the prices will come down.

I win about $800 a year on the lottery here ..... by not playing it! Its so expensive and I have not met one person yet who has won a thing.
You'd have thought the odds were better than the UK?
Cheers

Christmas is a time for caring and sharing.
I am a vehemently non-religious person, so this is what crimble means to me.
It shouldn't require a fortune to be spent to find a place to enjoy the festivities.

Lee,
Know what you mean about NZ xmas
Its would be cheaper to hire a snow cannon for the back yard with the cash from the ticket. Get a great big tree festooned with lights and start the whole thing up about 10pm until dawn. Youll be able to build a snowman by 2am.And staying up all night will put you in the right time zone.
Ps Kj do you really think oil prices will go down:no
