Hi All,

While waiting for the ITA I think it’s wise to start looking for a job offer, so it will speed up the migration process.

I’m in the IT (Software) sector and my plan is to come for a short visit (for about 2 to 3 weeks) and have prearranged interviews with some companies in person both in Auckland and Wellington. Is this a good idea?
Currently I’m making a list of IT companies to contact directly, so I will have a set of interviews waiting for me at the time when I get to NZ. At the same time I think I should contact recruitment agents and set up interviews via them too. But then I came across the following questions:

Should I talk directly to the companies OR setup interviews via recruitment agents OR use both methods? What if I use both methods and recruitment company sent my resume to a company I directly contacted?

Do recruitment agents charge from us for the service?

Your comments and suggestions will help me a lot in planning my visit.

Thank you very much in advance.

Regards,
/Beetle

1. I'd say both. there seems to be issues if you join up with multiple agencies and THEY contact employers with your CV multiple times, so would be worth letting an agency know which companies you intend to contact directly perhaps?
2. you should never have to pay a recruitment agency as a job hunter.

Totally agree that you should not have to pay for a recruitment agency.

My OH came out for a week in Auckland and had some interviews set up prior to arrival that he'd got by contacted companies directly. He also had some that had been set up by recruitment agencies so I think its definitely worth doing both. Its worth making yourself known to some agencies prior to your arrival as well.

However, make sure that the agencies know which companies you've already approached, who you've spoken to (if anyone), who might have had sight of your CV, which jobs you've applied for directly. Also make sure that if you register with multiple agencies they all know who else you are registered with so that you don't have multiple agencies putting you forward for the same jobs.

Have a read of these threads, they'll probably help:

Good luck.

Hi, I am new to the forum. I have submitted my EOI on the 9th July 2008 and my EOI got selected yesterday 16th July 2008.:cheers

I thought of visiting NZ to look for jobs. I have sent my resumes to several of the job recruiters and companies but their reply to me is for me to get all the visa done before applying.

The thing is, to get a visa, a job offer is preffered, however to get a job offer they require a visa.

How do you juggle with this requirements during your job hunt in NZ?

I am really at a 'dead end' on what I should do to move forward. Thanks... :(

I am currently looking for job opportunities in IT. I hope someone can help me out on how I can explain to the potential employers that I need an offer letter before I could get the visa approved. I have arranged for a trip to NZ for job hunting but am really worried about not having a visa might hamper my chances of getting an offer. Please help.

I think that once employers actually see you in person, they will realise you are serious about coming, they will get so many applications from people who have never set foot in the country, if you show you are really keen by being here and being interviewed in person I'm sure you will stand a much better chance.

We met lots of people at the expo in manchester, and once they knew we had a reccie trip booked, they couldn't give us enough phone numbers and information to get in contact once we were in the country. Kevs job offer resulted from an interview when we were on our reccie trip, our problem was we needed the paperwork before we could even put in our EOI and had to wait a while for them to get it all sorted, but it came through eventually!

Try and set up your interviews before you get here if it is going to be a flying visit so you don't waste time hanging around trying to catch the right people at the last minute.

Good luck!

Pretty much what I was going to say. It really does show potential employers and agencies that you are serious if you come to visit for interviews as they know its not a cheap exercise. Also if you are aiming for PR and can show that you are part way down the track towards that you are a more attractive candidate.

Definitely try to set some meetings up before you arrive by contacting companies or agencies about a fortnight before you land.

Good luck,
Anneliese
