Hi everyone. We are still trying to make final decisions about leaving SA. We have two four legged family members - golden spaniels - aged 1 year. They are litter mates and we love them dearly. There is NO WAY we can leave them behind! It is a huge stress imagining them in 4 months of quarentine after a long stressful flight. Can anyone share their experiences as honestly as possible. We are looking at Christchurch as I have a job offer there. Please help!!!!

There were some discussions a couple of months ago about bringing pets in through quarantine, but I'm not sure which country they were from. I'll see if I can find it - have you done a Search?

Here's the list of threads that came up. You could try PMing anybody who sounds as if they were going for it, to ask for more details.
Good luck. I can well relate to regarding the four-legged people as family members.

Following on from J&M's links, you may find this post in particular (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showpost.php?p=143607&postcount=19) to be quite reassuring.

I will say that since your dogs are so young they will take it better than older dogs. I have heard that the quarantine facilities are not too bad, though I haven't had experience with them yet (my cat will be quarantined for 30 days, but not until Sept).
I know you can visit your animals at most facilities.
Good luck. And believe me when I say it will be harder on you than your dogs.

Hi , we live in Pretoria and will be flying out on 6th of July and have to leave our pets (1 Boston terrier and 2 cats )behind , since they have not had te required rabies test soon enough . They can only fly out at the end of September and then 4 months in Quarantine .Unfortunately , the choice is either never to see them again , or not to see them for a while . Might be selfish , but I want them back with me ASAP . Just trying not to think of months inbetween . They have all emigrated from UK to SA in January 08 and are all scheduled to join us in NZ . I suppose it is hard when you are part of a nomadic family . This however is the first and last move I make where my pets will have to go into quarantine !!
Lots of luck , it breaks ones hart
