Hi Guys

I didn't know either, but Google does. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braai
You will not be entirely without this honourable tradition, I think it's safe to say.:D

Hi - they have a BBQ in NZ. Similar but fiffferent. SA braai is unique. We are from SA and thinking..... very scary though to make the move. Are you from SA??

I think BBQing is pretty universal. But that's a cool name for it. :nice1

BBQ is cooking food over gas outside, braai is cooking food (copious amounts of red meat) over an open fire outside. It tastes completely different. Has anyone found good boerewors here? I haven't yet and have almost given up on the whole idea....
For those of you who are not South African, boerewors is a kind of sausage, that is traditionally cooked over a braai and eaten like a hotdog, i.e in a long roll.
Is cooking over an open fire even legal here? :D

Having never had the real thing (i.e in SA) I don't know if I'm qualified to say if they are good or not but I like the ones we get from Janssens butchers in Browns Bay. www.janssens.co.nz
Or maybe try these guys: www.blackballsalami.co.nz although I haven't tried them myself so can comment on quality.
Enjoy!

Cool thanks. I'll give them a try sometime. We have a South African butcher near where we live, but his boerewors and his droewors are both dodgy... Koeksusters and samoosas are delicious though!

Okay if we want to get technical, BBQing is slow cooking meat that is spice rubbed over coals for hours. What most people call BBQing is really just grilling.
Notably, in the United States, practitioners consider barbecue to include only relatively indirect methods of cooking, with the more direct high-heat methods to be called grilling.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbecue

We got boerwors in Woolworths the other day. They were on special and everything.
My OH is from South Africa and thoroughly enjoyed them. We've stocked up on some more and they're currently in our freezer!
