I'm trying to get some of the more important decisions made before we leave for wellington, and one of the major stumbling blocks is figuring out where we'll stay when we first arrive.
Ideally i'd like to have a place with a kitchen(ette), clean but simple, hopefully that has a weekly or monthly rate (so we don't end up broke our first month)
So where did other immigrants stay when they got off the plane?
Thanks :)

For us, the employer sorted out and paid for accomodation for the first 4 weeks so it made the task much easier.
Do you know where you want to work or live yet, as I would look for accomodation near one of those areas.
Many people have opted for holiday homes or batches as they may work out a bit cheaper for long term rates, but these may not be available depending on the time of year.
From a hotel / motel perspective, pretty well all the rooms (if not all of them?) we have stayed in have at least a kitchenette, so this shouldn't be a problem.

We stayed here
http://www.queststpauls.co.nz/
Can't say if it was cheap as employers paid, don't think it is that cheap but it was everything we needed with a 2 year old in tow, it had shower room, 2 1/2 bedrooms, kitchen & living area & got cleaned each week
good luck

The Quest facilities are exactly what you want when you first land. Central, very helpful staff, close to all the facilities, kitchenette, washer/drier, etc etc. They aren't cheap, however I believe the first hand advice and knowledge you can get from the staff goes a long way towards pointing you in the right direction.
We stayed at Quest on Johnston - http://www.questonjohnston.co.nz/pgs/start.html
Murray Leman is the manager, however all the team are equally as helpful.

Hi Guys,
I used What's New http://www.whatsnew.co.nz/ They have a range of properties in Wellington all furnished and ready to go. I used a studio, large enough for two people and has all the usual facilities...good kitchen & bathroom etc. I think it cost about $480 a week. Cheaper than hotels and right in the middle of town. You can check the availability etc via the web site. Good Luck with everything.

Brandon here. When I lived in Wellington, my then-girlfriend has a place at Quest on the Terrace. They were small, but furnished and had a full bath and kitchen. Quite nice for a short term. It was really a just glorified hotel room.

We stayed here when we first arrived:

Lovely place with central heating! Very nice owners who are more than happy to help and advise. A short walk to the train station and an 18 minute commute into the CBD.
Good luck!

We stayed at Central City Apartment Hotel (http://www.centralcityhotel.co.nz/) when we did our recce and tried to book for when we moved here, but it was full up. :(
We ended up in the Copthorne at Plimmer Towers, where the staff basically out-and-out lied to me (I double-checked, making sure I had the definitive answer) and told me it had a kitchenette, something we had stated was vital for us. It didn't have one, and we spent way too much on food because of them. UNimpressed with them.
But wholeheartedly recommend Central City Apartment Hotel. :nice1

Hi
Quest on the corner of Lambton Quay and Hunter is very comfy and bang in the centre of CBD but it is quite expensive at $900 per week. We are staying now in a one-bed in Newtown; it is very clean, nicely furnished and the landlords are extremely helpful. The only downside is that there is no landline (but there is a very fast internet connection) and not much storage space. There is plenty of parking (unlike the Quest) and it is a 10 min drive (or 15 min by bus) to the centre. For $400 per week, it is definitely a steal. Check out the link: www.manleyterrace.co.nz

Wow, great response everyone! I've pinged manleyterrace, hopefully they have something for september. Otherwise, i'll rework our budget so that we can afford something like the Quest places. They are a little more then we were hoping to pay (i'd dogeared 500$ cdn/ week) but we'll manage either way.
The urban bach looks nice as well, how far out of town is it?
edit: i'm going to check out whatsnew as well, but their online booking system said they didn't have anything for September.
