Just wondering if I can open a Kiwibank account without an IRD number.
If not, has anyone gotten an IRD number without having PR, work permit etc?
How do you do that?
Thanks in advance. :)

Hi

Yes you can open a bank account with IRD no. Yes anyone can get an IRD no on her last visit my mum did. The only thing is you will be taxed a higher on any savings until they have an IRD no

Hope this helps

For getting the IRD number, this has now been tightened up so may not be so easy to get without at least a job offer.

For the bank, we were just asked what tax rate should be applied to the account - they had a 'flow chart' that showed what rate you should select based on your expected income. The IRD number doesn't actually help them as it doesn't tell them what rate to tax your interest on.

We set up account before we let the UK and activated it when we arrived. Our IRD numbers came by post a few days later and we just updated the bank :yes Also worth noting that our kids have IRD numbers too which I thought was a bit strange at first but they have savings accounts here.

Hmm. At the moment I want the IRD to open a kiwibank account. Do you think the bank would accept me ticking the highest interest box? I don't care that much and I can change it later. I just want to be able to get at my money when I arrive. I guess I'll have to ask them.
Getting an IRD before I arrive seems a bit problematic as they want original documents and I need my originals for other things. Shouldn't be hard to do once there...

Seems they have a FAQ just for that. They'll charge me the 39% until they get an IRD and indication otherwise. Well that seems simple... (famous last words...) :D
