Hi, Everyone. My name's Brian and I'm new to the forums. My wife and I are very seriously looking into making NZ our new home. Glad to finally find such a great source of first-hand information (that isn't looking to make a buck of me). Actually, I've been wanting to relocate to New Zealand since before M. and I started dating, which was about six years ago. Back then, it was kinda hard finding good reliable information about the immigration process. Even the NZIS website was hard to follow.
Anyway, I finally have skills and experience in a field that's in demand, so we're going to give it a go. I'll be posting a bunch of questions in (hopefully) the appropriate sub-forums, and I thank you all in advance for your responses
Cheers,
-Brian*

Oh, yeah. Well, I'm one of those "U.S. Americans." <Our official spokesperson.> (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R84a7njTd0)
Professionally, I'm a cardiac sonographer (echocardiographer). For those of you still blissfully ignorant of what that is--meaning you haven't had the misfortune of needing my services--I apply the same ultrasound technology used in obstetrics to diagnosing cardiac disease. Actually, I trained for this specifically because ultrasound has been on the long-term shortage list pretty much constantly since I first became interested in emigrating. (Other reasons, too, but that was a big one.)
At the moment, I'm trying to apply for membership in the Society of Cardiopulmonary Technology (NZ) Inc. But they seem to be pretty slow at answering my emails, so I'm still trying to figure out some of the requirements. What is a "qualification?" Is that like my college degree? Will a copy of my transcript suffice? Many questions. I may just have to stay up late one night and call them directly.
So anyway I'll be very interested in hearing from anyone who has found (or is seeking) employment in the medical field in NZ.
Also, on a completely different topic, I'm working on my private pilot's license, so I'd love to hear about the flying culture over there.
Cheers,
-Brian*

Welcome to the forum Brian!
I'm a radiographer from Canada (who knows exactly what a cardiac sonographer is) and I would definitley suggest starting on getting registered with the SCT board. Sorry to hear they are slooooow at answering your emails. I have to say I lucked out and always got a prompt reply from my board. Your qualification is when you get registered with the NZ national board.
For my visa I sent them my certificate of registered qualifications from the New Zealand board and from the Canadian board. I also sent a copy of my college certificate, just in case. Since the NZ board had already certified me (after 200 pages of documents that I sent them) I didn't feel the need to send a copy of my college transcript. I also sent a letter of good standing from my current professional body here in Canada...wasn't sure if they wanted it, but I threw it in there anyways. But I did need that letter for the NZ board, so you may want to get that as well.
Two places I might suggest for looking for employment are www.seek.co.nz - it's one of my favorite sites and easy to use. The other is to try looking on the district health board site - www.moh.govt.nz/districthealthboards . Go to the "links to DHB websites" and each DHB should have it's own career section.
Hope I hepled you out a bit. Good luck with everything!

Welcome to the forum Brian!
The funny thing is that if you distill her answer down to the most basic form, it is correct. There is a correlation between the percentage of people unable to locate the US on a map and the percentage of households lacking maps. But, of course, if she had just said, "Well, I think the problem is that not enough kids grow up with maps in the home, and that geography is no longer emphasized in schools as it used to be," she would never have become a Youtube celebrity.
Thanks for the links. I've bookmarked them.
Cheers,
