Hello, hello hello from James n Laura,

Been reading the forums quite a lot and decided to finally say hello and maybe make some contacts for when we (hopefully) migrate over.

We are a married 28-32 brit couple, with 2 kids, 2 years and 6 months old.

We have been looking to move to NZ for a couple of years since visiting NZ duing a world tour in 2005. We hired a camper van and toured the place and fell in love with the country and the laid back people.

We are hoping to move over begining of next year, currently things are waiting on the sale of our house (*sigh bad time to sell*). Put our EOI in April with 150 points, no job, accepted the first week and have just recieved our ITA mid June. Hopefully should send that in the end of July after medicals complete.

Will most likly start in Auckland due to most IT jobs being there, but could move around for the right job. I (James) am a vb.net developer, been in the industry 8 years, asp and sql to back it up. L is a primary school teacher.

My original worries about moving over were all about the ITA and requirement to apply for the visa, but now getting the house sold is becoming more of a worry. I'm sure many others are in the same boat.

James

Hi there James and Laura,

Welcome to the forum! My hubby is also in IT and we're hoping to head out to Wellington (also some good opportunities in his field there we understand!)... also in the frustrating position of waiting for our house to sell, and yes it is all a bit worrying. Am trying to think positive...

Good luck with everything... :cheers

We are from Spain, my hubby is IT and although I am Secondary Teacher I'm working as EA. We are looking for jobs in Wellington... And also waiting for selling our house (Mission Impossible in Spain). Yes, I am trying to be positive... but sometimes is very difficult.

There is a company I know based in Hamilton that is gaining a good reputation, winning awards and the like, and seem to be expanding.

They do a lot of .net stuff. They are called Enlighten.

www.enlighten.co.nz

I don't know them well enough to pass on a CV, but thought it might be a useful pointer for you.

Medicals over. Believe everything is OK so far, blood tests and xray pending. Somehow I managed to loose 4inches off my waist in 3 weeks.... A man who likes and misses sweet things!

Hi to you both. We're also new to this forum.......again. We joined a few years ago when we were looking to emigrate to New Zealand, and now we've joined again as we've now planned to move back again after living in NZ for over 3 years.
I certainly know where you're coming from with regard to selling your house......it's the same here and we can't sell our house either so that we CAN move back.

Stay postitive and keep your fingers crossed that things will work out, as we're doing. Good luck!

Congratulations on passing your medicals - I never knew until reading this forum that NZ was so particular on a potential immigrant's waist size! Anyway, just wondering why you are leaving the UK? As South Africans with a young child (and British passport), the UK could have been our first option, but we dont like the weather...and lifestyle. However we do beleive that it would be a safer option than South Africa (crime is unfortunately increasing here). We are still thinking about leaving, so far NZ would be top of our list, so looking at our points etc before applying...and also thinking about the decision first...!

Wow where do I start? Political stability. A government that isn't afraid to go nuclear free, that doesn't feel the need to blindly follow American men into unecessary wars. Space, less people, space! 3 years ago we travelled the world for 9 months and I know there's something better than what I have even if it's only better because it's different. I can't stand the thought of spending the next 18 years in the same town doing the same things. I want a new experience while my children are young enough to not be too afffected by big moves. Also because we can. So many people I talk to say they would love to do something like this but they can't for one reason or another, and we are lucky enough to have this opportunity. Who knows what will happen, but we at least have to try. Also good old fashioned being sick of England. Tired of people who do nothing for this country being rewarded with houses and benefits and tax reliefs, while those among us who graft get nothing. Crime rates worry me, the overcrowding in schools (I'm a teacher in the primary spectrum) worries me, the fact we are experiencing a population crisis that no-one is prepared to admitt. I'm watching my home town get bigger and bigger with ugly crowded new-build estates that will probably be full of people who don't have the values I do. I hate that families aren't valued in this country, marriage isn't rewarded or valued. I hate living in a country that makes me unpopular around the world. I hate that my capital city was attacked twice in one month by people who hate my country so much. We actually do live in an idyllic little town in Cambridgeshire but even that is changing. 3 men had a fight in the road in front of me just today on my way home from my babies nursery!

That was Laura's first post ^^ :)

For me I liked the sound of NZ before we visited it. Once there we spent a magical month (in the winter) travelling in a camper van from North to South. Even in the crowded city of Auckland (during 2005 rugby tour!) I felt like people wanted to be there. People were friendly, laid back, helpful. When we were in Samoa, we met 3 families from NZ who were telling us to come over, we could stay at their place, call in for a coffee, how well we would fit in (we need teachers!!).
I like the fact that it is not easy to get into NZ, I don't want to be snobbish nor do I think myself better than others, but I do want to live with people who want to get on in/with life. A country that wants hard working people is a place I want to be.

Thanks so much for your posts and info on why you are leaving the UK...really interesting (always thought crime was so bad in SA, but seems its heading over to the UK fast and furious!) By the way: sorry it took so long to respond!

I don't think crime here is high, I've had a car stolen, mum had hers broken into 3 times, couple of incidents with people in the streets, nothing serious really. In general it's safe, however 70 million people means you hear about it a lot more. Do I want my kids growing up here however ....
