Hi,

I've just picked up my first web development job in NZ and realised I don't know what company to choose to use for hosting.

I'm looking for a Unix/Linux package with PHP5 and MySQL support for building on a WordPress, Drupal or Textpattern open source CMS. Ideally the hardware is located in NZ or Oz. Good support is key, not necessarily the cheapest price.

If you can recommend a company to register .co.nz domains through that would be great plus any names to steer clear of. Openhost looks good (http://www.openhost.co.nz/webhosting/104/unixHosting.html) but I'd welcome any feedback.

Many thanks,
Chris

We were using openhost for web development on my last contract.

Seemed to be pretty good.

I used lakesideinternet.net to register my domain name.

If you don't mind hosting in the US and like the idea of running your own virtual server I'd highly recommend Slicehost, been running my site there for 18 months or so (http://www.secretprojects.co.uk). I've used freeparking.co.nz to register a couple of names, seem OK, but .co.nz domains are a lot more expensive than the .co.uk ones I'm used to.

If support is the big requirement then I'd recommend hosting in the states with asmallorange.com who have first rate support.

You can register your domains through 1stdomains.co.nz who work alright for me.

Hosting in NZ is very expensive!

I have used Kiwi Web Host for the last few years. I have had a little problem with a spam filter catching webmail, but I think that might be my ISP. They answer emails within 24 hours, and uploading is stressfree now I have discovered AceFTP, rather than using the way I was recommended by an 'expert'.

Thanks to you all for the detailed responses (some of those secret projects look pretty cool too!). I thought the prices for .co.nz domains looked quite steep but I may go with Openhost for a trial as it's a small site and a good way of testing the water. The Kiwi Web pricing and hosting options look very good though.
