Has anyone seen a cheap baby carrier anywhere? I'm just looking at one I can use round the house really & I saw on TV a while ago one that looked like a wrap style thing, I sold mine in a carboot as my other dd was always too heavy for it but now with a smaller baby I could really do with one as she doesn't seem to settle unless she's being moved about, I could get sooo much done with 2 hands rather than the one I'm trying to use at the mo :wah

Winkalotts have them from $45: http://www.winkalotts.co.nz/Travelling/Front_Packs.htm

They've got some of the wrap types on scarecrow farm for $70: http://www.scarecrowfarm.co.nz/index1.html

(but I'm sure you can get them cheaper.) Where I used to live I quite often saw African women carrying babies tied to their backs or fronts with blankets or sarongs just tied around their middles. I always thought the babies looked lovely and cosy.

Thanks Jo Jo that's exactly what I need (the Moby wrap) but the price :no My sister is in The Gambia at the moment maybe I'll text her to ask them how they tie them out there as I'm sure you could do it with a sheet or something, your not telling me they have these fancy things out there. :)

Here you are: http://www.mamatoto.org/Default.aspx?tabID=193

There are lots of pics and tips on this site, plus it tells you what sort of fabric to use, and how long it should be. http://www.mamatoto.org/Default.aspx?tabid=121

Would this (http://www.thebabywearer.com/) be any help, for getting advice on wearing and maybe making your own sling/carrier?

I was about to recommend the Baby Wearer forum, but YouMeand3 got there first.
I have friends who are all complete sling addicts, and they recommend the Moby Wrap for when baby is small, and the BabyHawk for when a little bigger.
A ring sling is also pretty easy to make yourself, and doesn't need too much sewing skill either.

Try a local secondhand shop that specialises in baby stuff (I nearly wrote secondhand baby shop). It can be really difficult to shift baby things when they grow out of it. You should be able to pick some nice things, including a carrier.

here is step by step photos

You need thin breathable/stretchable fabric of 80%polyster, rest cotton? in size of 16ft by 2ft (cost me $28 from Spotlights cos it came in 4ft by 16ft:yes, so you have to cut in half to get two pieces of 2ft by 16ft)
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb175/nippa101/slings/sling006.jpg

wrap (middle of) fabric around the front of your tummy (band) to the back, then cross over at the back, then go over your each shoulders, then cross over again front of you, then put end of fabric go UNDER the band that across your tummy
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb175/nippa101/slings/sling008.jpg

then go around the back again and tie in double knot as above. You should see a cross on your back

and a cross on your front with band across your tummy slighty loose over the cross.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb175/nippa101/slings/sling010.jpg

put baby's leg through top one of cross, pull fabric slightly over baby's one side (make sure baby's arm is inside the fabric), then repeat again for top another side of cross
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb175/nippa101/slings/sling012.jpg

your baby should be look like this by now and is well secure in a cross with legs hanging out, then pull band that go across your tummy over the baby, check baby's feet is inside the band, not hanging out
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb175/nippa101/slings/sling015.jpg

finish! have fun!

Hope that help you, any questions, just ask!
By the way, I used this for my 2 years old too when baby was fast asleep in the pushchair and didn't want to move him but my daughter was getting tired, so easy and comfortable to use

I just realise I also made another sling, the one with ring but I found it hard to use with weak neck and shoulders (results by work accident then car accident soon after!!)

Thank you so much Sophia, a trip to Spotlight at the weekend I think
You make it look so easy, think I'll stick to the one without the ring as back not that strong
Thanks again & everyone else for all the suggestions
