Hi,
I'm due to move out to the Aukland area in UK autumn and my kind wife has agreed to stay in the UK to sort out the house and the move!! we are interested in the DIY approach to shipping as we make need to bring a vehicle with us and that means we will be looking at a 40ft and some considerable costs. Although we have just started looking at the options we have some real basic questions and are looking for any advice/guidance/feedback. I'm sure we will seem really stupid not being able to get answers to these questions but just googling seems to make things even more confusing! so here goes

Is it right that you can buy/hire 40ft containers privately and if so does anyone have any recommendations - we are in East Yorkshire

We believe that household freight goes mainly through UK southern ports so are there any companies that will transport from the north of UK to south and then store if necessary?

We can't understand how we get in touch with companies who will just ship (we are bombarded with those offering the full service door to door) - are they freight forwarders? or are they the shipping lines themselves? and has anyone got any recommendations?

Can we handle the paper work ourselves or do you have to have an agent at both sides?

Is the paperwork difficult?

Someone seems to suggest that there are savings of approx £700 to be made we have been quoted approx £5,000.00 for a 40ft door to door service does anyone have experience of whether DIYing can reduce this considerably? (we are willing to put in the effort if we can save enough money)

ANY ADVICE/FEEDBACK WOULD BE REALLY APPRECIATED - WE ARE LIVING IN VERY CONFUSED TIMES!!

I think EVL offer a pack yourself option in their quotations, so may be a good half-way solution for you compared to trying to sort everything out yourself.

There is a thread on here somewhere froma few months ago by someone who entirely did the shipping DIY, hopefully you can have a scout about and find that - it may have some tips for you in there too.
