Darn. I got a letter indicating that my EOI was deselected because I miscalculated my points entitlement. I had claimed points for work experience in an Area of Absolute Skill Shortage - I have been working as a software developer for 20 years. I am a senior developer who has seen the rise of the PC, and the rise of the Internet, and has worked gleefully at the deepest and most technical level possible in the field. Thus, I thought that the statement "the principal applicant is suitably qualified by training and/or experience" would apply to my situation. Unfortunately, my university degree was granted in Chemistry and not in Information Technology. Somehow, I didn't read the fine print that seems to rather clearly state that to claim credit for my 20 years experience, I would need to have received a degree in IT. Unfortunately, when I was in college, my university didn't even offer a degree in computer science. Yes, it was that long ago! :) Obviously, I had much coursework that would overlap with a computer science degree, but unfortunately, not the actual degree. I've been working in the software world since before I graduated from university. Seems odd to discount all that experience... Oh well.

Frustrating. A bit of a waste of money on the EOI and sadly, I don't really see any recourse. Shame on me for not reading things more carefully.

I guess I need to shift to a plan B.

Hi,

So sorry to hear that? What is your plan B? Are you still insist or finding another way to migrate to NZ?

At the moment, I'm thinking that my plan B would be to do a job search and then resubmit an EOI with a job offer.

The whole thing is a bit deflating. Stupid of me to not read through things more thoroughly. I guess it just never occurred to me that all the experience would be discounted because my degree was in a different field of science. My enthusiasm got the better of me. I do know that in a job interview, there would be no questions about my degree but NZIS has a different policy, as is their prerogative.

Sorry to hear your news, frustrating would be an understatement I expect!! I am sure that NZIS changed their policy in February regarding work experience and its value in comparison with degree level quals etc.. but I could be wrong.

The following links may help with your case:

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/NZIS/operations_manual/8430.htm

and

(Select the first link on the above page, and enter ICT in the search field in the following page).

Your Plan B is pretty much where I am at the moment although I have already arrived in NZ on a 1 year work visa, got a job, and recently submitted my EOI.

I wouldnt have had enough points to go for PR from the UK, however, being here, and having a job, which demonstrates and utilises my experience, gave me enough points.

Cheers, and don't give up!

Don't lose heart!
Did you see the posting from the IBM recruitment person? she says: For us, the ability to do the job is far more important than if you have tertiary qualificiations. So if for examply you are an expert at SAP, Maximo, Java, Project Management but had no degree we would still be very interested

Maybe that could be your plan B? good luck.

we have had lots of plans and have lost track of what letter we are on .

tend to agree with you when I qualified no such thing as a degree - over the years feel I have morethan done a degree - sometimes you just can not beat experience - I suppose that is difficult to prove though

I would get a job offer and go again . best of luck
