When we arrived we had no idea what we needed and where to get things
so here are a few things we could not have done with out..
Kiwi (her knowlege and advice she offers a great start up package)and cheaper then others
taxi from airport (get the shuttle bus its a 14 seater with a trailer on the back) it cost us $25 from the airport to shirley.
Sim cards
(you can get them at any mall from the voda phone shop) cost $35 with
$5 credit and $10 if you complete a survey
A map of CHCH
(we found the yellow kiwi path finder one best) costs about $25 but well worth it
it has an index at the back with all the mall's, park's,medical centres, etc
Internet connection (we used a local one connected same day we arrived with in hours didnt even need to go and do paper work untill we had recovered from jet lag and took one call(cost $25pm with lynx)very nice lady called anna ,you can always change once you are settled.
A car is a must if you have small children, as CHCH is a big place
although the buses are good and run almost every 20-30 mins to almost everywhere in chch and cost $2.
its hard when you have so much to sort out like rentals and shopping which could be across town from each other.
Where to get shopping(food) pac'n'save is the cheapest and has all the same brands as the others (a bit like aldi )
(house hold stuff) warehouse, k-mart found at most mall's
(furniture) canary furniture, target. (just off colombo st)
(cars ) Moorhouse ave (longest car dealer strip i have ever seen)
banks we opened one with national bank of NZ via the internet really easy to do and when you arrive you go in and activate it's very easy.
we changed some of our travelers cheques in the air port for essentials and taxi money.
these are a few things that might help any thing else just ask.
