As school request everything should be labelling, clothes, shoes etc inclding pencils & pens :uhoh
We have tried dymo's labels but doesn't stick onto pens & pencils well.
So what did you used for your children's pen & pencils? does it work well for long time like a whole school year would be ideal!!!

We used sew on labels for clothes so that stuff can be sold on when we move with no permanent name in it. Got labels from http://www.able-labels.co.uk/ as it was cheaper than anything we could find in NZ at the time we needed some.
Daughters school do not allow then to look after their own stationary/pens etc (although I put my foot down about the left-handed scissors, that come home with her every night)....the teachers label all the kids pens etc up with CD marker pen (aparently works well) and keep them in the classroom in big pots.

For uniform, we used Name it (www.nameit.co.nz/) as they can do family pack. We brought 300 labels at $60 and split into 100 per a child.

Sharpie pens write on anything.
PS - you know you've gone too far when you label your labelling machine :)

Sharpie pens are in all the paper plus, whitcoulls and post shops. I think I've seen them in supermarkets too. They are very good for labelling most things.
We even found it took at least a month to rub off plastic lunch boxes, so can't be bad. Doesn't come off in the wash if you write on clothes labels either.
Don't let the kids loose with them though!

I got AJ labels for kindy clothes from
https://www.stuckonyou.biz/newzealand/index.asp
they do all sorts of labelling stuff... although the iron on dots dont last that long through the wash, so prob better for not so frequently washed items like jackets. the shoe labels work well though!
eidt... CD marker pens do work well too, I label all my plastic tubs with them for the freezer, and its really quite hard to rub off!

All our pencils etc are communal in the classroom.
But....if I did have to label a pencil, how about sellotape? Not particualrly hi tech, but it will work.
We just write in clothes now, as the labels never stay on, we tend to write the surname in case it survives to get passed onto the next child. Its been a challenge with shoes, as a lot of ours are black, so we get creative with silver and glitter pens. Seems to do the job!
Cheers

Way back when I was in school, we used to label pencils by getting a pen-knife and shaving the paint off the end you chew (one side only). You can then write straight on the wood with a ball-point.

I am a bad mother and I don't label anything....
With the way my DS looses things and the cost of his uniform (in particular the winter jumper which is $47 - $58 to replace) I have labelled everything, including his socks! About the only thing not labelled is his underwear! I'm a very old fashioned mum (or a glutton for punishment) because all clothing related items have name labels sewed into them.
BTW can anyone give me a fullproof way of labelling black shoes other than using glitter pen?

Anneliese, the shoe dots from the site I mentioned earlier work well.... they go inside the shoe under the heel, and one hasnt come off yet, despite shoes going in the se~!

I use www.nameit.co.nz too and have had no problems with them at all. Was able to split a family pack too Sophia - got half in sons name and half in daughters then asked for half to be sew on and half to be iron on - so 50 of each sort! Wish I bought more iron on!! Its the only ones I use now
With sons school regulation socks being $15.00 a pair I use the iron on ones and iron them on the flat sole part of the sock - (with a hanky on top cos of the nylon in them!!!) Its great - I couldnt sew them on! They havent tried to come off in the wash at all!!
For pencils I use a biro/pen to scratch their names in. For felts/rulers etc I use a sharpie!
I see the above named shop has personalised pencil, coloured pencils and even shoe labels.!
For the best personalised ones I use on their water bottles came from Ezibuy! They have been on all year and these bottles get washed everyday! Havent even started curling at the edges or anything!!

Think I'm going to be saying the same as a lot of people here... I would use the 'shave off and write in ballpoint' method mentioned above for pencils, and scratch name with a compass-point for pens (but mind your fingers). You could try using a correcting-fluid pen (Tipp-Ex or similar) for writing on dark-coloured shoes, either inside or under the instep in front of the heel.
