Just had a long weekend in the Big Smoke and the highlight has to be seeing a pod of Orcas swimming off Cheltenham beach in Devonport. It was fantastic!!!!!! So unexpected and we'd have been totally unaware if a kind lady in a restaurant hadn't stuck her head out of the window and informed us. Stood and watched them for ages - a very special moment.

Wow! I lived 19 years in Auckland and never saw anything like that! Lucky you :)

Gutted!
They actually have orca sightings on a relatively regular basis round Devonport. If the schools find out, they will take the children out to see them.
However, I have yet to see one, but it seems that everyone who visits for the weekend does! :wah
Cheers

ALSO gutted! Both times in NZ, kindly taken out on son's in-laws' yacht, once off Devonport and once off Whangaparoa, we didn't even see DOLPHINS, which apparently they 'always see, every time they go out'.:(

When we were driving back from the marina at Whangaparoa, we DID see an orca - that is, somebody's home-made mailbox had been made to look like one!:laugh

Hi
I,ve seen a few Orca pods coming in recently whilst out fishing at Karewa island. Usually they're heading towards the mount (maybe for a latte?), or the the Bowentown entrance at the top of Matakana usually looking for sting ray.
When its really quite they just sneak past, sometimes only a couple of metres away, without a sound, except their breathing.
