Hi,
When I get to NZ (I'm an aussie), what do I need to to/where do I need to go first? Do I need to get a social security number or tax file number or something before I can open a bank account?? What sort of documentation do I need to take with me? Do I need a NZ bank account to rent a property? A step-by-step guide telling me what order to do things in when I get there would be good because I don't want to be making lots of trips backwards and forward with 2 kids under 2 yrs old in tow.

Thanks

First you should pick a bank :)
Most of the banks have a migrant banking section on their website. You can pretty much set it up online. You don't need an IRD to start off but you will need one eventually.
Once you arrive in NZ you head over to your bank and present yourself and they will set you up with cards and etc then.
As for the rest of it, I'm not at that point yet so not sure, but I'm sure someone will know.

The main banks are ASB, ANZ, BNZ, Kiwibank, National and Westpac - and there are lots more.
I found a comprehensive list on a link from the Christchurch City Council Migrants guide to Christchurch
http://www.localeye.info/pages/?catId=536

This is the migrants guide if you want to have a look at the whole thing

The banks all have different charging structures, so you'll need to check which one best fits your needs.

My own personal experience has been with BNZ and I can wholeheartedly recommend them. The service has been fabulous.

Bad news is you have to put some money in too, why do banks never give free samples? :exit
On Saturdays our butchers has free samples of their homemade sauages?? :clap

Not fair is it! Also spewing that I have to part with $450nzd or more to get my quals assessed, they love my wallet!!!:exit

Melly, I have been recommended many, I will probably go with Kiwibank or ASB, I am not fussed which bank, just whichever one is easiest to set up because I am lazy...:laugh

In case I missed it-where are you thinking of heading off too? We are going to Christchurch, which I have been to a few times, but I am sick now with worry as I don't know where to live there..:o

Hubby has been offered job in Hamilton. We are in the process of deciding whether to take it or not.
