OH has a band (?) saw and dust extractor. He wants to take these with him. Is it a good idea, or would it be better to get rid of them now and buy new once settled? Would getting them through MAF be too much hassle (all that wood dust????) or are they very expensive to replace and therefore worth the extra hassle of getting them cleaned and passed by MAF?
Would really appreciate some advice as we need to move quick if he's going to have to sell them.
Hopefully some DIY'er will know what I'm talking about (even if I don't :p)

I'd say bring 'em. Not that I'm a wood worker or even a DIYer however my Dad is a real handy man and I know how he hated having to buy new tools when something broke down. You kinda get used to how something works and its little quirks and get comfortable with it.
Equally although NZ definitely has a culture of DIYing and 'getting on and doing' I don't know what choices there are in terms of buying new equipment here. Have a look at www.mitre10.co.nz and www.placemakers.co.nz and www.bunnings.co.nz to get an idea of what is available.
Finally in terms of MAF I'm sure that if you give them a good hoover and clean you should be able to get them through a MAF inspection. They may ask to have them cleaned further which would be at your expense but I can't see them refusing to let them enter the country.
As I say I'm no expert and I'm sure somebody who has been through this will come along soon to help but my gut feeling is bring them!

"BRING IT BUT MAKE SURE IT IS SO CLEAN" shouted my OH from garage where his woodwork toolds kept ;), the woodwork tools is so expensive here. My OH got that thingy you talked about too and he spent whole evening while we were in UK, stripped to bare and vaccum every dust, wood etc out of that, put back and did pass MAF check once we got there.
MAF lady never see this so clean before and usually in the past, few of them failed MAF checked as she told me because people didn't bother clean it out.
So you have been warned!:D
Any questions on woodwork tools, just ask!

Tools seem far more expensive here (certainly power tools anyhow).
So if you got room and time to scrub it all down, i would bring it.

Know what you are tlaking about, heard OH going on about his stuff SO many times!
One regret we had, hubby anyway, was that we sold all his power tools before coming out here, so yes, if you can fit them in, bring them. They are ridiculously expensive out here!

There was a serious tradesperson with many, many fancy power tools needed for his/her occupation who posted awhile back on this list that his/her plan was to bring it ALL and rewire all power tools after arrival.

Normal eh? OH has never been that :p
Cleaning process is starting now - well he's clearing stuff out of 'his' shed to be able to work back towards his saw. He's huffing and puffing a lot about why I've put boxes in 'his' shed and he can't get to anything. I'm sure they'll be plenty of these 'tense' moments to come over the following weeks :roll
