I tried to search for these info, but couldn't find exactly what I want to know. So I will apologize before hand if some questions are repeated.

My Kiwi husband and I are moving to Wellington sometime next year. We both have quite sepcialised careers, which might make finding a job a bit difficult. The plans is to save up as much money as possible while in the UK, so we can have some cushion for the first few month in Wellington. Thanks to the forum I am no so scared about renting a flat anymore. There are only two of us, so a 1 bed room flat should be sufficient (so maybe 1500 for rent a month, is this reasonable?). We are not going to buy a car for awhile, will be relying on public transportation, also pay-as-you-go phone should be enough for us as well.

However, we have no idea how much food and utilities are going to cost. We are vegetarian and pretty much cooks at home all the time. Could people give a rough idea how much food, electricity and gas would cost for two people? Mike, the kiwi husband, already asked his family in Wellington but couldn't get any straight answers.

Thanks for all your help. This is by far the best and most helpful forum on the internet.

Me and my OH rent a two bed flat fairly central in Wellington. Our rent is $300 a week so $1200. We cook from scratch every night and we spend about $100 max on food for a week (usually it's more like $70)

Our gas and electricity seems to be averaging out about $150 a month.

Also, factor in to your budget that if you are renting and not bringing all your stuff with you from home you will need to furnish the flat. We bought most of our stuff from the Salvation army and other second hand shops and thata ate a good bit into what we had saved.

Good luck!
