At first it seemed like it meant "retirement flat", but now it seems like it also means a small, non-income producing farm? Help?

It's usually a property with a bit of land - anything from half an acre upwards. We call it a smallholding in the UK. It can also be used to generate income usually with a few sheep or cattle. That seems to be quite common here.

It's a term somewhat overused here in NZ.
From a broad point of view, it represents some kind of utopian ideal that all us leemings strive for.
NZ is a "lifestyle" destination, houses are advertised as "live the lifestyle", "lifestyle bloock" is another favorite - generally a place in the country, people are moving away from the cities in search of a better lifestyle..........you get the idea.

Ah, I see...maybe I connected it with retirement because people who retire probably want to "live the lifestyle" and things geared to them are advertised that way. Thank you for clearing that up for me!
