I'm renting in Wellington and the water is included in the general rates which the landlord pays. I don't have gas so the only utilities I pay are electricity and telephone/broadband.

Hi,
We're renting in Tauranga. We're on a water meter which we pay. We also pay for the gas, electricity and phone line/broadband. The landlord pays the council rates,

For water, most of Auckland region have meters so you would have to pay for usage.

For Wellington region (and most other regions) it is not normal to be on a meter, so normally no charges to pay (if you are renting) as it is included in the rates.

As you are looking at Hamilton region, maybe someone from that region can say if they also have a water meter and what the costs are for them.

For electric / gas, check out the thread on 'powerswitch' which allows you to enter your location and usage amounts and gives you approx annual costs.

We rent a two bed flat in Wellington. We don't pay for water (I'm presuming the landlord does because our flat is attached to their house) and we have gas (which we only use for cooking) and electricity. Our last bill was about $90 for a month but there's all sorts going on with our bill that we don't understand! We should be paying about $150 a month we think.

We also pay for phone and broadband which is $90 a month. It's another $50 a month to get digital tv which I'm trying not to but we have bunny ears on our tv instead and it's frustrating when the signal goes all the time so I might have to give in soon!
