Just received email
Says "I have now received your medical back from the MA and they have confirmed their original decision. Specifically, the MA’s comments are “Morbid obesity as outlined previously. To be reconsidered we require evidence that weight loss has been achieved and BMI now <40.”
What do we do next? Waiver?

Don't be too downhearted. I had a colleage with the same issue, when he was looking to move to NZ. Thankfully he felt that he could do something about his morbid obesity. You need to get to a BMI of less than 40, from what your email says to get your medical accepted.
If you are looking for a quick boost - 12 week program with counselling and has to be backed by your GP, have a look at www.lighterlife.com if you are from UK or Ireland.
Its a tough program, but it depends on how important getting to NZ is for you.

Two choices now:
(a) Medical Wavier?
(b) It it possible to take me of our application, my husband and son
get there PR, and for my hubby to sponsor me?
Keep on reading email, but totally confused by all of the paragraphs, I think I need to leave it a couple of days, and read it again
We have been given to the middle of August to decide.
Any advise would be much appreciated

1 stone = 6.35029318 kilograms

Oh Karen what disheartening news. Not sure what to say except to suggest keeping doing what you're doing and see if you can shift some more weight. You've done sooo brilliantly so far and NZ and all its delights is waiting (no pun intended) for you.
Good luck with whichever route you decide and remember if you really, really want to be here you'll get around this bump in the road somehow.

You've lost 4 stone/56 pounds already!? Go, girl! You're doing GREAT! You're doing it ABSOLUTELY the right way by exercising and making healthier choices dietarily. And just 2 stone more to go? You are WELL on your way!

Sorry to hear that, kind of expecting to get that same letter myself soon sadly :(
Try Lighterlife or Cambridge Diet, both i have done years ago, and although i ended up putting it back after a couple of years i did lose 6stone in 3months on cambridge. It works fast..

Fantastic, thats great news, you are soo nearly there....keep it going! I know how difficult it is, but you do need to keep focussed and don't let them get you down. The 2 stone will fly off you.

Sorry to hear the bad news... :( Please don't take it personally. The NZIS MAs are just following protocol and doing their job. Hopefully you will able to get it sorted out (the BMI issue) and re-apply for PR later in the future.
Wishing you well..

Don't know about the alternatives but...
just wanting to say how well you have done to get as far as you have with losing weight...keep going because in the time it may take to find an alternative you would have lost even more and lowered your BMI further

Wow! What an amazing achievement to have lost all that weight... they should be shipping you here as an advertisement and as inspiration. :clap
Hopefully they can see what a tremendous effort you have already made, keep us posted on the next stage and keep doing what you're doing!
Good luck,

When NZIS declines on an application due to obesity - how long do they give the applicant to get down below a BMI of 40? Is it dependant on how far over the BMI the applicant is? Or is it the same whether your BMI is 41 or 48?

I'm very sorry to hear that! Do you think that it's worth your while trying to get a waiver? Surely if you can get evidence from your GP that you've lost lots of weight and are committed to continuing then that should count for something and should give you a good case for a waiver?

Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear that. Don't let it put you off though and do try for a waiver. Surely the fact that you have done such a brilliant job so far shows that you are commited to getting down to the magic target and that should count for something.
Don't give up on it now! I only got through the whole process by imaging sticking pins in my medical assessor :-)

Because of my BMI still be too high, Dont know what to do next, just feel if I have let my family down. I know what people are thinking that I should have done it earlier (I know that). I want to find our if it is possible to remove me from the application, and my oh and son get there PR and I reapply next year.

Oh how disheartening, especially when you have lost so much weight. A friend did Lighter Life last year as she did not want to have an operation on her knee and the weight was a contributory factor. Is a BMI of below 40 the standard criteria or does it vary and this is what they've set for you?

NZIS are 'interested' in anyone who has a BMI of 35 or higher (aged 20+)
Or if your waist circumference is greater than or equal to 88cm for Women (or 80cm if you are Asian/Indian descent).

The 88cm kills me- Some people are just of a larger build than others and have a larger waist. I had to suck in to get the 88cm and I have a normal BMI. The only reason my waist is so large is because I'm really tall.
Kags- Don't give up! Keep chugging at your goal!!!

Eeek! :uhoh
My BMI isbelow 35 (just about) but my waist measurement is quite a bit more than 88cm. All my fat seems to like my belly. I've been working out with a personal trainer and have lost inches from chest and hips but nothing from waist. It really does like to live there. Doc did blood tests a year or so ago for 'syndrome x' or whatever the latest worry is and I've had diabetes tests. All come back fine. However, it looks like getting much stricter with the diet is a necessity now.
Having read some of the advice here I shall be giving up alcohol, white bread and potatoes and cutting back on the rice. No cakes or sweets at all.

Good Luck Jacqi!
I'd say- don't cut out all rice- switch to brown rice. (Though do not have it be your entire meal of course). Brown rice has more vitamins and fibre than white. And it has more texture- which I've grown to love and cannot eat white rice (or white bread for that matter anymore) because there is not as much texture.
It sucks that you cannot spot lose fat :/ but best of luck! More than likely you'd just need the extra blood tests and not have to worry too much, but it's better to not have to deal with it.

Thanks. I have tried brown rice in the past and not liked it. I bought some brown basmati the other day and thought I might try cooking some white and some brown and eating them together, gradually increasing the percentage of brown to white.
I'm at home during the day at the moment and UK TV are running ads for NZ so when they come on I tell myself 'that's more appealing than the wrong food'
