Looks like we are going to be arriving in Wellington, the first week of September, my OH is a keen windsurfer so we were wondering where in wellington would be the best place to live.

Mike is going to be working in the CBD and we will be renting to start with, we would like to live somewhere where he doesn't have to travel to far to go windsurfing.

Also what sort of things should we be looking out for in a rental home, any advice please.

Steph.

Hi.
I've often seen people windsurfing in the bay at Plimmerton. That's about 20 minutes from the CBD by train.
Good luck!

I know they surf in Island Bay which is has a regular bus service to the CBD. I'm not 100% sure if they windsurf around there but I think they do. Maybe some googling on island bay will show something up?

I would imagine that the Porirua / Pauatahanui Inlet would be a great place to windsurf. It's sheltered from the sea, so it's normally pretty flat but still gets the wind (you can't escape it here in Wellington). Having said that, I'm not sure I've ever seen anybody windsurfing.

Plimmerton is the spot, as per lara croft's post above. The areas to live which are close by (in approximate order of distance) are Plimmerton itself, Camborne, Mana, Paremata, Papakowhai, Pukerua Bay, Whitby, Pauatahanui. Each of these has its own benefits over and above the proximity to the sea.

Ideally it should have an aspect so that it gets a good amount of sun, ie orientated to face north or north west. Then it is likely to be relatively dry and warm, irrespective of the build quality which can be difficult to assess (in terms of insulation etc). Most other factors come down to personal choice.

Thanks everybody for the replies, at least we will have a rough idea where to start looking.

Send me a PM when you get there. I'm a windsurfer and will be living on the Miramar penninsula. I'm flying out tomorrow(!) but my sailing gear won't be there until mid-September. We can be wind dummies together! :cheers

As has been said by others, plenty of wind surfers around Plimmerton.

Another very popular surfing spot is Lyall bay, went past yesterday and they had wind surfers and kite surfers enjoying the wind :)
