have had 3 shipping co's round for quotes - not going to get into naming names and we haven't even had all prices back yet but one of them really got on my wick - I think he was blatantly lying to me regarding things about NZ so how can I trust him about shipping our gear??!!
Firstly.. this bloke tells me (after seeing some of our furniture) that there are is Ikea in NZ !!! :uhoh I say are you sure (knowing there is not) and he says he reckons there might be THREE !!!
then when I showed him the mens/boys precious dartboard they want to take - he said oh yes you want to take that as they are different in NZ, they don't have triples/trebles ?? IS THIS TRUE??? maybe I'm doing the fella an injustice and NZ darters (is that the term?!) do it differently! (ooooh errr)
can anyone confirm either way ?
(but I do know there are NO Ikeas :p)

Pretty sure a dart board is a dart board is a dart board, but can't recall actually seeing one here to be honest.
Hang on..... here's one for sale on TradeMe. Looks pretty 'normal' to me

Sounds like a pratt to me! Doesn't exactly make you have any faith in the company, eh? OK, they dont have to know everything about where you are moving to but to come up with such bizarre "facts" as the dartboard.... weird...

Vicki - we felt the same when someone told us we couldn't take some of our furniture (like a coffee table with a rattan base). We just felt we couldn't trust that company, despite their good quote, and we took all the stuff he said we couldn't and had no trouble with MAF at all!

I remember when I announced at work I was going to NZ I was amazed after how many people told me (it was several, for both comments):
A) How great it would be to live in a really hot country
B) NZ is so close to Japan, it would be great to be able to go to Japan on holiday
Eh?
I'm sure we had some form of Geography lesson when I was at school. These people must have had the day off

:laughThere are plenty around like this. When I was talking about having visited the family in NZ, one woman got out her diary, which had a series of world maps in it. She handed it to me open at the page showing Scandinavia, and said, 'Show me exactly where it is you've been?'
Then, when I was at a meeting in London, a university lecturer, having heard I live in Dorset, asked me where I was staying. I said I wasn't - I'd come for the day. He looked surprised, and asked, 'How?' I told him I drove to the western edge of London and came in on the tube. He said, 'But you won't be home till the small hours...' I told him no - once I got back to my car, I'd have a drive of about 1 1/2 hours, at which he snorted and said rudely, 'You must drive like a maniac.' I asked him where exactly he thought Dorset was, and he said, 'Well, you go through Cornwall and on, don't you?'

He wasnt from pickfords was he?
we sked them for a quote and told them we were flying out on the 21st june.
he came back with a price which was to high, he then kept ringing us up, leaving
messages with new prices. each one lower than his previous "best price".
He even rang us the day before we flew out with yet another price.
I told him twice we were using another company but he refused to let it go.

Ikea to arrive in 2008
12:00AM Monday November 06, 2006
By Richard Inder
Swedish homeware giant Ikea - famed for its cheap and stylish flatpack furniture - plans to open a store in Auckland within the next two years, the Business Herald has learned.
The firm is said to have engaged Auckland consultants RCG to help it find a site for one of its giant stores.
Sources say the company is seeking a site near Albany and hopes to open its doors in 2008.
Ikea in Australia and Sweden and RCG declined requests for comment.
The arrival of the firm will provide stiff competition for retailers such as Harvey Norman and Freedom Furniture. It employs more than 100,000 people in 34 countries, operating out of huge barns selling furniture, bathrooms and kitchens and everything in between. It is thought the firm's demand for such a huge site is one of the factors that have delayed its entry into this market.
Ikea was founded in 1943 in Sweden by Ingvar Kamprad.
Its name comes from Kamprad's initials (I.K.) plus the first letters of Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd, the farm and village where he grew up.
The sleek and simple furniture designs that have made its reputation came only after competitors prohibited the company from using their designs, because they feared Ikea's growing strength.
Then this....

Ikea not coming - because they'd be too popular
5:00AM Thursday February 07, 2008
By Anne Gibson
Ikea won't be arriving in New Zealand any time soon.
Ikea won't be arriving in New Zealand any time soon.
The prospect of giant homeware/furnishings business Ikea opening in New Zealand has long been anticipated and hoped for by fans of their low-priced designer goods.
Rumours often circulate about the funky business opening a store here, with Auckland seen as the most likely place.
But the chances of the chain opening here just took a step backwards.
The Environment Court has banned the Swedish-headquartered furniture business from being a tenant in Redwood's new Mt Wellington venture because its stores are so popular it is feared traffic chaos will ensue.
"Ikea stores are known to have high traffic-generating characteristics," the Environment Court ruled in allowing Redwood's new shopping centre. "Accordingly, they have been specifically excluded from allowable retail activities in this consent."
Rents at Mt Wellington would make the store an unlikely candidate for either Sylvia Park or the new development.
"Ikea has been looking in New Zealand for quite a while but they couldn't afford Sylvia Park and they won't be able to afford to go on our site either," developer Tony Gapes said.
So, for your nearest Ikea, try Sydney's Homebush - still.

Not really, no. There's Freedom Furniture but they only really compare in terms of style as it's quite pricey and limited wares.

He's now browsing trademe for woodworking tools so he can make his own furniture when we get there. :roll

I have to agree. When they opened a store in West Sacramento, CA, I waited for the stampede to clear and then stopped by one weekend. Except for the lighting department which had unique novelty lamps and the kitchen area which had useful gadgets, I couldn't understand the fuss. The furniture didn't look as if it would last long, which might be okay if it doesn't cost much, but it seemed pricey for the quality --
I will say IKEA is fun to walk through, just to see what's new in terms of design and decorating colors --
