Hello, I would just like to ask the community about your views on the the Treaty of Waitangi.
Questions 1: How much do you know about the Treaty of Waitangi (Nothing, A bit, A lot).
Questions 2: Do you think the New Zealand government should continue with treaty settlements? Why? Why not?
Questions 3: Do you think New Zealand should follow the principles of the treaty today? Why? Why not? (Principles include Partnership, Fairness and Equality between Maori and Pakeha).
Questions 4: How has the treaty affected your life in New Zealand?
Questions 5: Do you think that the treaty settlements will bring more peace between Maori and Pakeha? Why? Why not?

It's customary to offer your own views first when starting an opinion topic on a forum.

Hi Schalk,
In my opinion this subject is very difficult to discuss on a forum. To start with you need a lot of knowledge about history and the actual (different) contents of the treaty and the way it was finalised etc. before being able to have a view on this. I have done a lot of reading on the subject and talked about it with numerous kiwis and non-kiwis, but do not think giving my views here would be of any benefit to anything or anyone.
Furthermore, since most of us are recent immigrants, I do not think it is very 'correct' to give opinions, since we have not lived all our lives with this Treaty and do not know the full effects of it (as yet).
Just my humble opinion,
Anita

Just to clear the air a bit, my main purpose for posting this is because its part of a school assessment of mine, where I have to ask 5 different people THESE 5 questions, after that I will have to display the questions and the results on a poster. (Side note, I was born in Namibia and moved to New Zealand when I was 3, and I am now 15)
Thanks,
Schalk

I first came across information about the Treaty of Waitangi when visiting the museum in the Domain in Auckland. It's obviously got huge implications for nowadays, and it's something I think I'll certainly need to read up about when I get to live in NZ.
But in common with a lot of people on the forum, I'm not there yet. And this isn't something that is widely known about outside NZ, I'm sure.

ok here goes
1) quite a bit - have to for work, and wanted to.
2) yes - it's only fair
3) absolutely
4) It hasn't yet, apart from needing to know it. I treat my Maori clients in exactly the same way that I would if I didn't know anything about it...
5) No. I think there mainly is peace between them anyway, and more understanding will be achieved by education at school - te reo lessons for all from 5 up, better representation in the media etc.
Hope that helps
Sam
