Hi, planning to bring my DAB radio, (only has DAB) however does anyone know if UK DAB radios work in NZ, if so what is the coverage like?
Thanks

Not seen any DAB radios in NZ, but according to Wiki
New Zealand has been trialling DAB since November 2006 in Wellington and west Auckland but wants to use the new DAB+ standard once testing is finished.

Now, I'm not exactly what you'd call techy, and have no idea what DAB really means, but I do know I have a DAB radio and have no trouble listening to NZ radio stations.

No DAB here in Devonport - but ours picks up FM so we use it like a normal radio!

To be fair, and probably a little brutal...
NZ are so far behind technically if your thinking of DAB radio, then think UK 10 years ago i am afraid. Radio here is even still very often AM, with also some FM stations, but less ALL FM like UK. RDS / EON and Traffic radio systems which have been standard on FM radios in UK for last 3-4 years doesn't seem to exist here.. So when they catch up with those technologies, then maybe we could expect DAB 2-3 years after those.
They only just discovered Sat-Nav, and HD television and thinks its some NEW gadget... ;)
As much as i do love it here, the old saying often used "New Zealand, Half-way across the world, but 20years back" although not totally accurate is sometimes a little true.
Still the Iphone has made it now :) (if only i could get one....)

I was beginning to wonder Milliemoo and in fact was waiting for OH to come home to ask him about my non-working UK DAB radio before I said "are you sure its a DAB radio?" as I didn't want to look silly.
Thanks Leccy-Lee for clearing up the confusion in my mind. Anyone want to buy a DAB radio to send back to the UK for a Christmas present? Its practically brand new as I got it for Christmas 2006 and we moved here in August 2007! I've still got the instructions and might even have the box somewhere - yep we brought everything with us! :o

So how come it doesn't work here? Does it not have an FM setting like I'm assuming mind has?

According to my OH and his Google habit, DAB is now being trialled in a few areas, including Hamilton?!? Not sure if there is any truth in that, mind...

I agree with Leccy-Lee!
We love it here and would never go back to the UK, but there are some things in NZ which are very behind-the-times in comparison to the UK. We miss our DAB radio with its excellent reception, plus I miss having RDS and EON in my car, plus digital TV (though with the normal standard of NZ TV, maybe not!). But we don't need satnav around here as there aren't enough roads to choose from:)

What's wrong with the Digital TV (apart from the lack of channels and quality of programming that is)?
There's both Freeview and Sky, it may have taken them much longer to get Freeview but that has allowed them to move forward to the next generation technology straight away.

With you on that one Ian, I am using the Freeview HD offering, via rooftop ariel and have been very impressed by some of the HD Content on TV3. However, at this stage, with only 10 or so channels and 3 worth watching theres still some catching up to do!

I meant the lack of channels and quality of programming:yes, not the quality of Freeview. We'll probably be getting Freeview when we move - it's good quality, no subscription to pay and no multitude of sports channels either!

If I might make a suggestion for some alternate ingredients:
Some kind of computer.
A broadband connection.
An amp and some speakers.
A Squeezebox (http://www.slimdevices.com/)
The AlienBBC (http://www.x2systems.com/AlienBBC/) plugin.
Sometimes I even listen to BBC Radio Lancashire...

Lee, didn't you see the sign at baggage reclaim when you arrived? "Please put your watches back 20 years".....

All well and good but not really something I can take out into the garden! Then again at the moment I'm not exactly able to go out into the garden what with all the rain. :(
Thanks for the suggestion though might get OH to look into this.

Sadly mine is stack DAB tuner is DAB only, so useless here for the moment. I don't think it's just NZ where Digital Radio hasn't taken off though, is it used much in Europe?
