I'm looking for pictures of the Wellington area to use as a background on my computer. This way, I can fantasize even more about my house having sold and think about my upcoming arrival instead of thinking of stuff like work. :laugh Please point me to the kinds of photos that will make my coworkers jealous!

Many thanks,
Keith

I took this one from Somes Island, looking across the harbour toward the CBD

Nice Welly pic, tigerlily... But, um, where is Somes Island?

Google Maps shows "Matui" Island in the middle of the harbor at about the right distance...

Does that island have two names?

I'm a bit of a map freak, and these things bother me! My wife says I'm always checking Google Maps so that I'll know where I am. ;)

Wow - I had no idea that Wellington was so beautiful...I seemed to have picked up that it is one of the less scenic cities in NZ..but I could have been wrong...cause it looks rather gorgeous!

They are the same island, quite often called Matui/Sommes Island.

Matui is the original Maori name.

my sister in law (an Aucklander) came down to visit us in Wellington after having lived in Auckland all her life.... and travelled half way around the world on her OE.

She said (and I quote)

"oh!! it's quite lovely isnt it?"

lol
That's Aucklanders for you!

I think Scorching Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Especially when the pohutukawa trees are blooming along the bay. The water here is much clearer and more tropical than I was expecting for this latitude.

There are some good pictures from the Wellington area at http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Oceania/New_Zealand/North_Island/Wellington/ - more artistic in nature than pure tourist snaps tend to be. If you go back up a few levels you can find photos from all over New Zealand.

wellington is one of the most underappreciated places in NZ.. visitors just seem to only spend a couple of hours there waiting for the ferry to the south island.. such a shame! it's where i was born and raised so obviously i'm biased, but i think it's stunning. my family home is in melrose, overlooking lyall bay etc.. one never gets bored of that view.

my grandparents/great grandparents planted some of the pohutukawas there. when my mum was growing up they still had the bach there where they would spend summers. things have changed quite a bit, but still such a gorgeous beach! :)

When we first came to NZ and began looking for a place to settle we just never considered/visited Wellington at all. Our choice in the end came down to New Plymouth and Christchurch and we picked Chch. Then a couple of years ago we spent New Years in Wellington and I thought it was fantastic. Had we visited in May 04 it would have been a hard choice between Wellington and Christchurch I think.

Thanks Marion:)
I had never been on a bridge that had a courtyard and a grassy park on it before! I highly recommend finding it for those looking for interesting sights in Welly.

Now that I live here, I should post a few pictures myself. This set of pictures is mostly the Evans Bay (http://cassellnz.shutterfly.com/84) area of Wellington.

I like the purple cauliflower too.
I had never seen such a thing before. It can't be natural, can it? Since NZ is anti-nuke, it probably isn't a mutation induced by a nuclear accident.

Even though it was a cauliflower, I still had a taste, because it was purple. That's just me. If you ever want to trap a Keith in the wild, use some brightly-colored foodstuff as bait.

Just selective breeding, apparently. I'm a lifelong fan of purple sprouting broccoli, so I'm not surprised they could get a brassica to flower purple.
