Hi, guys. My first post to this part of the forum. Question: are there any fares or mechanisms, equivalent to UK-to-NZ one-way migrant fares, that are available from the USA to NZ? There's may well be too small a market for designated migrant fares, but what about pro-rated fares (although I am aware of the apparent paradox you often get with airlines whereby a return is the same price as the one-way)?
Cheers,
Matt.

OK, I'm probably being thick here, but what migrant fares are available? Is this a standard one way ticket? If Air NZ offer these they are likely to offer the same for US passeners I would have thought, given that some of their routes go via the US.

Mark - hmm. I'm pretty sure that at least one/some of the Australasian airlines offer cheap-ish one-way migrant tickets from the UK. As far as flights from USA on AirNZ go, I phoned them yesterday and found out that the one-way in late June is pricier than the return. But you can still use one half of your return and discard the other (I thought things might have changed since 2001, but no. You just can't get a refund.)

I am pretty sure that none of the airlines offer 'migrant' fares from UK to NZ.
I'd love to be proved wrong though.

 Sorry, Veronica and everyone. I was probably thinking of a thread on another forum about some 2003 'phone-bookable Qantas migrant fares to Oz. And until Veronica picked me up on what I was saying, I just thought that the phenomenon of migrant fares was a fairly new but popular one set up for Oz and NZ to satisfy the migrant market. That is, I didn't think to check my story because I just thought the phenomenon had been introduced in the UK and was well-known these days. Sorry again!
Cheers,
Matt.

Not sure if this is only a student thing or if it's also valid for young-ish people -- as some of their stuff is -- but STA Travel was offering a great student one-way fare. SFO -> AKL on Air NZ for US$568.

Hi MB :cool
Check with this travel agency in Seattle...
http://www.travelteam.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.detail&id=48
They buy block tickets on Air New Zealand and often have very good fares...but you have to travel during set times. If that works for you, it can save a lot of $$$ :yes One-way fares are almost always more expensive than RT. We bought RT tix and just never used the return portion. No one showed up at our door demanding we leave. :laugh
And if you have a choice between Air New Zealand, Qantas or United, pick ANZ...they have more leg room (and better service) :nice1
Also, here are a couple of websites that offer info on the best seats to reserve on specific jets...
http://www.seatexpert.com/ (They list ANZ jets)
http://www.seatguru.com/
http://www.airlinequality.com/Product/seat_intro.htm
And here's a nice little site that offers info on international travel...

Have a great trip! :cheers
