We are currently renting in St Albans but are thinking of moving to Sumner or surrounding. Know that there are some great primary schools there but wondered what high school children go to as there doesn't seem to be one in the area. Do children generally have to travel into Christchurch to got to one of the high schools there?

Have a look here
http://www.schoolzones.co.nz/enrolmentzones/Search.aspx
These are school zones to get ideas which schools in the zone areas of your house.
When I put Redcliff, seven high school came up including Linwood High. When I put Sumner, just two...:o
Or contact K&SC if you can as she might able to help with this, she got children of her own.

Thanks for that - doesn't look like a great place to live for proximity to high schools which is a shame as has a good primary. It looks like it is only zoned is Middleton Grange as Linwood High School etc does not come up with an asterisk next to them. Does anyone know what Middleton Grange is like? It seems like a long way from Sumner. :roll

MIddleton Grange:
Middleton Grange School delivers the New Zealand Curriculum in a quality fashion from a Biblical perspective. It is a fee paying school - Seems its around $1600 pa + some course fees.
Theres a bus that goes from MacCormacks Bay into the school which helps on the distance thing!

Hello,
This is my first post to the forum. We are moving to NZ in January. We currently live in Seattle, WA. DH is a Kiwi from Christchurch, our girls are Kiwis by descent, and I'm awaiting my Residency Permit. We bought a house on Mt. Pleasant in February on our last trip "home". We have 2 school age girls, one will be in her last year of Intermediate, and the youngest is 8, I'm not sure what year that is. Given the age of our eldest daughter schools were a major factor when considering the move. The school zoned for the area is Linwood, and we have been told is not a high decile school. We wanted our girls to attend an all girls high school so going into Christchurch was our only option. I believe many of the schools have an enrolment period when they have open houses and such, and some have a lottery for the open spaces, especially for the first year of high school. These usually take place in July/August of the preceding year your child would attend. We have good friends who live in Redcliffs. Their boys are at Cashmere and they love it. We did find out that there is a bus for the students living on the hills, that will take them to their schools. I'm not sure about Redcliffs and Sumner, but I can't see why they wouldn't be able to catch the same bus. Anyhow, long post. Hope that is helpful. If you google Christchurch High Schools there is a website that lists all of the schools private and public, and you can link to each schools website.

Welcome to the site and thanks for your thoughts - very helpful.:nice1 I will certainly research further - I have also heard that Cashmere High is a good school. It is a concern that we wouldn't be in a definite catchment zone living in Sumner and would have to rely on a luck to get a place at a decent school. I suppose if you found out that you hadn't got a place in the lottery then you would still have time to move into zone - desperate measures! We have thought about looking at living in Cashmere Hills but the property prices there are pretty scary...:exit:exit:exit

hi,
It might be worth checking with Cashmere High their catchment area as it covers other areas than just Cashmere. Plenty of lovely places at the foot of the hills are in the Cashmere High zone.
We are in St Martins and zoned for Cashmere High.
Good luck
