i wonder if anybody can help me out with a couple questions.
i have got a job offer on a six mth contract to start off with ( see how me and company get on ) the problem is i am in bali now and going to stay with friends in perth oz for a few weeks before going over to nz, does anyone know if it will be ok to go to nzis in christchurch and apply there for work permit or whatever it is i need, i was told they can do it same day but would rather someone who knows the ropes better to advise me.
its just a work thing, not a working holiday or a work to residence or emigrating stuff.
hope i have explained this ok, as a bit rough after too many bintangs .:cheers

Yes you can.
Bring your work contract, work permit application form, passport and 2 passport photos to NZIS and they will issue you the work permit on the same day if you go there first thing in the morning when they open for business :-)

From what I understand, a 6-month contract (hence a 6- or 7-month work visa) is considered too short to actually required qualifications and medical reports. However if you bring them with you, NZIS will make a copy of them for record as well, so it's more of an optional supporting document than anything else.

Oh, if you need special licenses or qualifications to do the job, then you will definitely need to bring those along for NZIS to make a photocopy too.

great kelvin, i wont bother getting a medical then ( save myself a few £ ) i suppose if i like it there and jobs ok then i could always get a new visa and permit for a longer period.
you any idea what it will cost to rent a place out in the country not in the city, near geraldine area if possible.
your a great help, thanks.
regards.

Do remember that any further extension of the visa/permit (presumably 12 months or more) will require a medical report and police certificate. Only your initial 6-month visa/permit will not require it.
I can only speak about rental prices in Christchurch (140km north of Geraldine). A "good" price seems to range from NZ$90-120 per week for one room (before sharing the bills with other flatmates, or some landlord may opt to charge a fixed amount of around $20 per week to cover the bills), or NZ$200-300 per week for a small 2-3 bedroom house (bills not included). Prices seem to get higher as the weather gets warmer...
