Finding an IT job

Hello,
In about a month I will be looking for a job in Auckland. My ideal job will be at an ISP. My question is: Will the potentially employer be happy if he finds my cover letter / cv in the fax (or the office email) or is it better to stick with seek.co.nz ?
In many parts of the world, direct contact with the employer (via email or fax) is a very good thing but I don't know the local habits. I searched for a list with ISP's in Auckland and I noted the email/faxes but I'm not sure if they'll be happy with this approach or not.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello. Welcome to the forum.:) I'm sure you'll get some answers when the people in NZ wake up.

Direct contact is a good thing....many job vacancies aren't advertised. That said, an e-mail or fax on it's own is quite likely to be ignored, especially if you are not sure exactly who you are sending it to. I would start with some enquiring phoncalls so you can direct your search within each organisation towards the right department/person etc relevent to your desired position.

You're not going to lose anything by directly contacting individual companies, recruitment agencies (robert walters & hudson are good starting points for the multi-nationals) and posting your CV on seek.

Hi and welcome.
My OH works in IT although in management. You might find this thread useful:

Or this one which discussing trying to get a job whilst still in the UK: http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13640
You certainly don't have anything to loose by approaching companies directly but I totally agree with FOM that it would wise to try and find out who/which department to direct your CV at. Also keep a note of which companies and which person you've approached directly so that if you sign up with any agencies you can let them know. They don't want to be putting your CV forward for jobs with companies if you've already done so.
Good luck!

Some companies only use agents and some don't use them at all, so by going with several agents and targeting companies directly, that are of particular interest, should mean you have covered all bases.
My OH is currently job hunting and is registered with 4 different agents and has approached one company directly. The company he contacted directly had clear details on their website about who to approach. They didn't have any jobs advertised but they still want to talk to him after seeing his CV. So if you really like a company, don't be put off if they are not currently offering anything suitable on their website its still worth contacting them.
Cheers
