In Wellington, (41S) currently sunset is 5:37PM. When does it get dark? Maybe 6:15PM. Really there is not much "dark" in the winter here, it's all over rather quickly.
(The earliest sunset is 5PM at the solstice, I think in the UK it's more like 4PM).

When we were in Auckland last August, we noticed nightfall as being at about 6 p.m., and actually, there is very little dusk, as in twilight, that we're used to from southern England. It's just suddenly DARK.
