I'm off to the UK for a month in a month, and realised today that I haven't got any travel insurance. I did start googling, but quickly realised I know nothing about insurance in NZ, so don't know which companies have good reputations, which have bad reputations, etc.
I'd be very grateful for any pointers - ta!

Southern Cross travel insurance seem good value, though we've not had to claim against them so we don't know how good they are from that aspect.

I have travel insurance through my credit card with Westpac, so it may be worth checking to see if you have something similar?
There are lots of companies offering travel insurance here: State, Mike Henry (both these are owned by IAG), Southern Cross and plenty of others. I've used TID in the past (before I had knew about my credit card!), as they were the cheapest and I was able to get cover online really easily.

We used Columbus Direct ( www.columbusdirect.co.nz ) for our trip back last month - didn't have to claim fortunately, but the premiums were VERY competitive

Thanks everyone for the advice. I went with Travel Insurance Direct in the end as it was cheap, easy to do, and covered my laptop... Do you like the way I made that sound as if I was all organised and did it ages ago? I've actually only just bought it - 12 hours before I fly!

I usually get it from fly buys (which has a deal with State) so you get State insurance but get some Fly buys out of the deal too.
also good advice to always check your credit card, I have aBNZ global plus which provides insurance cover for free if you book the ticket with tha

When we left the UK to come here I was organising travel insurance couple of hours before taxi was due to take us to the airport - glad it's not just me who's slightly unorganised :laugh

Well, will find out how good Travel Ins Direct are, while we were away i lost my eternity ring.... luckily I have a valuation report for it. It wasnt a hugely expensive one, but it was my fave of my rings... *sob* just emailed off all the paperwork.....
Only bugbear I have noticed so far is that the payout is in $AU as they are Aussie based... which is a PITA as payment will be by cheque and will have to clear as foreign currency which takes 21 days!!!

Oh no - you poor thing! I'd be gutted to lose something so sentimental.
I hope you get your payout quickly and can buy something sparkley and pretty to replace it as soon as possible.

Well, an update....
today I recieved my cheque for the lost ring, they paid out in full on the valuation certificate that the jewellers gave us when we bought it (minus the policy excess). It wasnt a high value item, but still worth claiming for...
The payment did come in NZ dollars which was good, the only complaint I have is that it took over 7 weeks to get this all sorted out, good job it wasnt a vital item that had to be replaced immediately.....
Plus side, i get to go jewellery shopping (again!) :)
