Hi,
I was just wanting to know what the average holiday allowance is for people working in NZ. I currently receive 30 days leave per year, is this similar to NZ or is it more or less??
Thanks
Nick

I wouldn't like to swear to this but I understand that the minimum is now 3 weeks but will soon be put up to 4 weeks for full time work.

Currently the average allowance is 3 weeks plus public holidays but this is being upped to 4 weeks nationally from 2006. Having said that, most people we know already get 4 weeks and some companies will negotiate on salary for extra days.

Standard is 15 days leave, unpaid in the first year  .. then paid after that. Also public holidays - about 6 days a year, plus up to 5 days sick leave. It was one of the biggest shockers for me - this side of the world to explore and no flippin time to do it in!

You do get paid for the first year, but if you start the job part way through the year they give you 6% of however much you earned in that year.

Hi
I always got paid leave for my first year in each job I did in NZ. I'd be checking out my legal rights if I was you Ruthyroo. And there are definately more than six public hols. Ummm, Xmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and the day after, ANZAC day, Waitangi Day, two days at Easter, your regional hol (eg Auckland Anniversary day), Queens Birthday and Labour day. Think that's the lot and thats 11 days, unless ANZAC day and Waitangi day fall on weekends then it's 9 days for that year. I think the UK has less bank holidays.

Do companies give additional time off (paid or unpaid) at Christmas besides official holiday leave? I was in contact with a few firms last December, and each one pretty much shut down for 2-3 weeks in Dec-Jan.

public holis only 6 days? are you sure? I thought I read on the booklet (accompany by ITA)--Living in New Zealand says that:
What Employment Agreements include
Main legal requirements:
minimum wages for employees aged 18 or older
minimum wages for employees aged 16 to 17
the same rate for the same job for male and female employees
three weeks' paid annual leave after 12 months in the job
11 public holidays per year, when these fall on days of the week when an employee would otherwise work
after six months' employment, five days of special leave for the next year, which can be used as sick leave, domestic leave or bereavement leave
after 12 months' employment, up to 12 months' unpaid parental leave (including up to 12 weeks’ paid leave)
leave for defence force volunteers.
I'm not sure if this is outdated :P

I was offered 4 weeks (20 days) plus the 11 days public hols. I politely but I hope strongly asked for 25 days in return for a commensurate reduction salary - absolute no go. 25 days being the preserve of directors only.
Oh well only 2 promotions to go

Yeah I had read the same thing on the booklet we got on our recent ITA. I was wondering about the sick leave in NZ, I mean if you get sick within the first 6 months of your job then you don't get paid? Is that correct?
Also say if I had a serious injury like breaking a leg or whatever, would that mean after 6 days, I would no longer get paid?
Sorry for the naive question but I've been working in france where I get over 30 days holiday (after 1 year) plus a huge amount of sick leave (as long as you have doctors note)....so it's quite a difference. :)
Cheers
Brendan
