Hi,

We are considering locating in Nelson- we need to be near a port city because I have been offered an opportunity to get into the import of homewares business by a mate in Australia. I was there years ago and liked the area, but I know prices have gone up substantially since then. I believe there is currently a decrease in housing prices going on there or is that just gossip? We may need to find a place to buy or rent that has a big garage or storage area- or enough land for us to build some storage. Anyone out there who is living in Nelson who can give me some feedback on the location?

Thanks,

Wendy

Hi Wendy

Think you will find some further info on Nelson further down in this section, in the way of replies to Nelson postings by other forum members.
My parents, brother (16) & sister (20) emigrated there in Sep'03 and are loving it.
From what I've heard my mum say, houseprices have definately gone up. But it much depends on the area of Nelson you're looking at. It's quite a big area, with places like Stoke (suburb) being far more affordable. Not sure if maybe Rimbo has any contacts or further info.

If there's something you'd like me to ask my family (in case no forum members come back with anwers) send me a PM and I'll forward your questions to you.

There is a forum member (Anita) who migrated to Nelson in January, but I've not heard anything from her for a while.

Have you ever visited Nelson? We were there in April'04, very impressed, clean and sunny. The whole region has a lot of appeal, but unfortunately not the IT related jobs that my hubby is looking for.

I too am looking at Nelson when I visit again in July hopefully. Babette, could you ask your parents if there is opportunity to buy run down houses and fix them up for re-sale? It's one of things I'd like to do if I move to NZ. I'd also be interested in part-time work at a winery while I'm working on the houses, so if you could check into that I'd be grateful. I'm in IT too now but also have an accounting background and sales too. Thanks very much.

Check out the backpackers website at www.backpackerboard.com for a link for seasonal winery work. There's also a good website at www.seasonaljobs.co.nz

Hope that helps!

We (me, wife and 3 kids) have just returned from a trip to Nelson (and a fair bit of the south island).
We stayed at friends and had a good look at the areas around Nelson.
We have decided to look seriously at Richmond, and posibly Mapua.
We did get the impression, talking to Realtors that the house prices have softened.
IT was 25deg when we left, we arrived at Heathrow to snow and -1 !!

I did notice on another thread about the Moggy Minor Centre in Wakefield.
Its up for sale, probably because there are 68 complete MM included, ie not a market for them anymore?

Thanks Cat! Good sites, except I'm used to making a little (lot) more than than $12/hour some of those jobs pay, LOL. But it might be a good starting point.

Hi
we arrived in Nelson in Jan and so far are loving it. :yes
If you want a place with some land then i suggest you look out at wakefield end[although there is a bit of a commute to town from there] or do what we have done and go out north of Nelson towards Hira[it is only 10 mins to town]and you can get more for your money[a house with some land and storage]
This is the more rural side and it is beautiful and a quick drive to town.
there are quite a few brits coming to this side of Nelson for the lifestyle plots.

house prices have come down over the past few months. :hopeso i think they may have stablised now.
