Phoned the tax credit 'help(:roll)line' this afternoon.

I spoke to 2 people who both confirmed that they have never heard of repaying tax credits when you leave the country. The second lady I asked to double, double check on their system as I was unable to find anything online. She thinks I was given the wrong information - which has done nothing for my stress levels

I did however find online that I should now be putting in a claim as a single person. Even though I did inform the guy I spoke to earlier in the week that DH left his job on 12th July and would be leaving the country on 13th August. He made no mention of the fact that I needed to submit a claim as a single person rather than a couple - He said he'd made a note of everything and then scared the bejesus out of me with his comments about refunding my payments. According to the information held on me, he never noted down I am now single  So I have at least stated that side of the process off. I wonder if that's means I'll get more money for the next 4-5 weeks that I'm in this country. What imaginary figure could they pluck out the air for me (that's what it feels like at times, LOL)

I had to repay tax credit when I moved to NZ and didn't question it. They calculate your TC on the current year so will recalculate based on what has been earned until that point. I didn't think it was unfair, in fact I feel the tax credit system is pretty good in the UK. Nobody likes to pay money back - such is life. I had to pay back some family assistance to NZ too when I moved back to the UK. Nowhere is any different...

I could of understood if it was a small amount due to year to date calculations etc., but he quite clearly told me I'd have to pay back every penny received, which was what shocked me the most. Thankfully it looks like that is not going to be the case. (And he didn't even record my notified changes correctly - I see that I can be fined £300 for not declaring that I'm no longer part of a couple as far as tax is concerned )

I'm a little confused at your comments, have you actually split up?

But what does that have to do with Tax? Surely they are still a couple with combined income?

If your OH goes on holiday they don't recalculate the taxes do they

We left the country in stages, and told the Tax Credit people, and no one told us to now claim as a single person. Wouldn't have made sense to me anyway, as we are still a family with combined income, as Ian said. My partner left three months after me.

I would suggest checking again if you really have to claim as a single person, because if you change your claim to a single, at this stage, the whole thing will be one complicated mess, and you really don't want that!

Good luck
