NZ anthems

... I'm thinking of songs that you hear when you're out and about, on commercials, in bars, on C4, etc., that have a New Zealand connection. Songs that pretty much everyone in the pub can sing along with. Good songs that may or may not have made it overseas.

Up until today (when I found some way to procrastinate rather than study pathology), I didn't know the artists or song titles. Now, for our mutual willing cultural indoctrination.... Please add your favorites...
:cheers

Why does love do this to me? (The Exponents)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwaD4GFjSjY

I walked out...you left me
You know I’m hurtin’ for you
It seems now that it’s over
But there is nothin’ I can do

I don’t know...oh...oh...oh...why does love...do this to me?
I don’t know...I don’t know

Jackie came...she went away
Deep in the valley I kissed her that day but
It seems I’m thinkin’ of you
But I’m still thinkin’ about myself

I don’t know...oh...oh...oh...why does love...do this to me?
I don’t know...oh...oh...oh...why does love...do this to me?
I don’t know...I don’t know...

Bliss (Th' Dudes)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a0z9ZcSwPQ

Yaaaaaah ya ya ya ya
Ya ya ya ya
Yaaaaaah ya ya ya ya
Ya ya ya ya

Drink yourself more bliss
Forget about the last one
Get yourself another
Drink yourself more bliss
Forget about the last one
Get yourself another

Drink yourself more bliss
Have a stiff one all night
Everything is alright

Try and reach the bar
Coppers took the car
Offers from the sidewalk

Slice of Heaven (Dave Dobbyn)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0pWejAnLUQ

Hey, I got a lot of faith in you
I'll stick with you kid- that's the bottom line
Yeah, you have a lot of fun don't you
And living with you is a ball of a time
Hey beauty when the mood gets you down
Your bottom lip's near dragging on the ground
That's when I gotta play the clown for you
Black humour made you kick your blues

Howdy Angel
Where did you hide your wings
Her love shines over my horizon- she's a slice of heaven
Warm moonlight over my horizon- she's a slice of heaven

Great tune and played heaps. It appears to have the same effect on people as "Come on Eileen" does in the UK.. everyone gets up to dance and yell the chorus... found ourselves doing it when in town with friends a few months back. :D

I'd probably add Dave Dobbyn's "Welcome Home". Nice wee homemade video with this one (sorry, Sweatpea, I think there's a haka in it....)

Great lyrics, too:

tonight I am feeling for you
under the state of a strange land
you have sacrificed much to be here
‘there but for grace…’ as I offer my hand
welcome home, i bid you welcome, i bid you welcome
welcome home from the bottom of my heart
out here on the edge
the empire is fading by the day
and the world is so weary in war
maybe we’ll find that new way

so welcome home, see i made a space for you now
welcome home from the bottom of our heart
welcome home from the bottom of our hearts
keep it coming now - keep it coming now
you’ll find most of us here with our hearts wide open
keep it coming now - keep on coming now
keep it coming now - keep on coming now

Oh, oh - and Anchor Me (Greenpeace fundraiser and commemorating 20yrs since sinking of Rainbow Warrior) .. it was a big hit when we arrived and it really smacks of NZ for me, plus features many of the NZ artists I love.

One more while I'm thinking about it:

Light Surrounding You (Evermore)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVMDqyR0Xq4

I see you by the water
Your toes dipped in the sand
I thought that it was over
I thought you'd understand
But the feeling is returning
Though time has made us change
And I understand if you don't
Wanna talk to me about it
Tonight
Oh, tonight

Cos I see the light surrounding you
So don't be afraid of something new

Time was overtaking me
And I guess I was confused
They were all inviting me
But I wish I had refused
Cos I'd been there before
And I've seen it all
And I believe in you

Poi E is the one they played when Valerie Vili won the shot put gold. I can't help but smile everytime I hear it.

And there's one guy who unites a lot of the songs mentioned above:

Dave Dobbyn: he was lead singer in Th' Dudes (Bliss, Be Mine Tonight and Walking in Light were their biggest and best hits); he was the singer of Slice of Heaven (along with Herbs) and he's responsible for Welcome Home, and my personal favourite: Loyal.

Th' Dudes also started with Peter Urlich, who you might have seen on Dancing With The Stars. And Ian Morris who topped the charts with his version of Game of Love (under the name Tex Pistol)

Added to Kiwi classics: anything by Split Enz and Dragon.

Great additions everyone! Here's another:

For Today (Netherworld Dancing Toys)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE82oke8BWM

If you told me this time last year
That I would feel like I do now
Well, I wouldn't have believed you
It's not just a question
Of my being alone
The truth is I like my own company best
If the truth is to be known
I didn't realise babe how much I cared
All I want to do is to be with you
And everything else seems unimportant compared

For today
I remember your smile
For today
I remember your smile...

My particular favourite at the moment is...

Gotta get a Garage
Gotta get a Gottage
Gotta get a Skyline

From the Skyline Garages telly advert (http://www.skylinegarages.co.nz/). By the way, what's a Gottage?
