Yay, we got our passports back today. So nice to actually have something official (well I suppose the final outrageous charge from my bank account counts as official :laugh). Just what I needed after my old car kicked the bucket at the weekend - I've been nursing it trying to get it to last for just another couple of months till we leave, so I was a bit dischuffed that it has expired this close to the finish line!
I have a question: as part of the Section 18 requirements, you have to let NZIS know your address. Since you're required to fulfill the Section 18 requirements within (I think) 7 months of arrival (the parts about working for 3months), is it okay to let them know your address then, and not bother with it straight away? We'll be living in a holiday rental for a couple of months then moving again, so it doesn't seem worth the effort. Or are they going to want to know where we're staying from day 1?

Sucks about the car...I guess that's one thing you won't have to worry about before you leave!

@Janey - Auckland in October
Well, the car might be fixable, who knows. It would probably cost a bit to hire a car till October!

I can't complain really. It doesn't owe me anything. I bought it new in 1996 and it hasn't let me down in all that time, apart from a couple of new exhausts. In fact, apart from my family, that old car is the only thing I feel sentimental about leaving behind :laugh

Is your car trying emotional blackmail then?
Congrats on the stickers.

CJ22,
Congratulations on the blue stickers!

I am about to submit my passport for mine, having delayed things as much as possible to maximise time to save. Typically, I now need to go abroad for work, so, how long does it take to get the blue stickers at the moment? How long might my passport be gone for?

Re: Section 18A; out of memory I just had to drop my case officer an email when I got here with my rental address and work address. We moved 2 weeks after arriving so I think I dropped another email with the next rental

Max, we were told 3 weeks but it actually took 10 days...
Things here seem to be breaking down as we think about leaving - first Cjs desktop PC, then the tumble drier, now the car - fortunately we are so happy about getting approval and the blue stickers we're still managing not to be too

Turns out the car looked worse than it was, and the nice mechanic didn't invent anything that didn't need doing, so panic over. An inordinate number of things do seem to be breaking down at the moment though lol.
Thanks for the best wishes all :)
NOW we can get excited!!

Thanks Dusk, I emailed my case officer who also said about 3 weeks. Hopefully it will come back sooner, but 3 weeks would be ok.
Sorry to hear about all the breakdowns with the various bits of equipment. These things happen. Last week my kettle broke and now my projector's on the blink!

HI
might seem a really silly question (but I have only just started looking into emigrating) what are blue stickers?? Everyone seems to get so excited by them!!

If/When you are granted PR (permanent residency), you send in your passport to the NZIS, and they put blue stickers in it proving the fact. :)

Ta :)
We're all packed up and staying in a B&B at the moment. Our stuff got shipped out yesterday, but annoyingly John Mason today told us that it 'probably' would ship 'at the end of the month'. This is definitely NOT what I understood by 'we're quite busy so it won't take long'! Bit narked about that, as it's a whole 3 or 4 weeks instead of maybe 1 or 2.
But we're free of obligations now at last, just the two of us and four suitcases to worry about. What a relief. I'm looking forward to 24 hours on a plane with nothing to do.
