hi all! You have all been so helpful, but I still have more questions (sigh).

I finally received my passport back with my 12 month work visa and work permit in it. (hurrah) but now I'm a little concerned with the text in the 'Conditions' portion of the visa/permit.

Work permit states: "You must leave NZ before expiry of your permit or be removed. This permit expires when the holder leaves NZ. The holder may work as any occupation for any employer in any location."

I'm planning on traveling home to spend Christmas with my family in Virginia for a month. In addition, my dad is ill and I may need to travel home often. What does 'leave New Zealand' mean? Permanently or if I just leave the country for vacation? Does this mean my permit is forfeited when/if I do this??

Hello,

I would think it means the permit expires once you leave NZ permanently. It is usually stated in your visa if what you got is a multiple visa, then you can make multiple trips outside of NZ and still come back. :)

(edit): Oops, I think what you got is a general non-employer specific visa so I can't help you on that... because what I have is employer specific. Sorry!

Does your visa say: Number of entries; multiple.?

When you leave NZ your work permit is cancelled.
You are granted a new permit when you come back as long as your visa is valid.

Permits are only valid whilst you remain in NZ as soon as you leave then the permit expires. It doesn't matter whether you have a 1 year or 3 year permit as soon as you leave the permit ends.

This isn't a problem though as long as you have a multiple entry visa which will allow you to return to NZ, as soon as you arrive then you will be granted a new permit to match your visa.

Thanks! In my confusion, I missed the tiny section telling me I can have 'multiple' entries on my visa. Whew. I just got my visa/permit today. I was so worried that I'd have to go through this process again!

oy, type A personality.

sorry for wasting your time!!

{...and NOW I can go celebrate.}
