Emigrating - travel insurance

I would like to hear what you did regarding travel insurance during the move to NZ i.e. travel to airport, flights, stopover and first few weeks while in motel. I am terrible:o at reading the small print but I assume I have to make sure it approves one-way travel...anything else?
Which address did you use? I have options of UK address as our flat will be let out and mail forwarded, NZ employer address, or NZ relatives address (on the wrong island though...).
Finally, can you recommend any insurance companies for this? Also is there a specific terminology for this type of travel insurance so that I know what to google?

We used http://www.walkabout.com who offer one way travel insurance with the option of adding extra days in the country of your choice. This means you can be covered for up to say 2 weeks while you stay in temporary accommodation and gives you time to arrange insurance once you arrive in NZ. When you arrive with most of your important belongings in your suitcase this is great.
Here's a thread you might find useful on the topic.

Thanks for this pinkpiggy:nice1 I did not get the URL link to work though...
Shockhorror...I got a quote of £93 for the 17 days emigration insurance, which seems very expensive:eek: I guess there may not be any competition in that pat of the insurance market... or maybe I just have to start reading the small print on other companies' products:uhoh

Most other companies don't offer one-way travel insurance; if you read their small print they will state that the insurance is not valid unless you are returning to your home - so buying normal travel insurance becomes a waste of money as it won't cover you.
The thread above shows who will cover you - we used walkabout as they were cheapest but I think that the Post Office also covers you.

Hi
Ive just insured with walkabout (http://www.go-walkabout.co.uk/) They quoted me £97 pounds for 21 days this includes a 14 day side trip to bali on the way out. and were both in our 50s.

can I ask your opinions on our scenario?
we fly out 5th october and currently have an annual family travel ins policy in place. we actually have return flights booked as we've no visas at moment (return is end of february but hopefully we won't be using it!!)
I know the length of our travel ins max trip is 62 days so we won't be covered fully but I thought we'd at least have some cover if anything was to go wrong before flight (illness etc) or lost luggage etc???
(once we get sorted in NZ we'll sort some home insurance to cover our stuff anyway. )

Well...last time returning from NZ, double-jetlagged due to just a 5-day stay, I forgot my carry-on bag at the airport WITH my laptop containing all work data and research and all personal photos and music, ipod and Bose noise cancelling headphones:eek: I was already on the train an hour away when realised this but luckily the security had not blown the bag to bits...

Yes, Post Office quote came out at £140 + extra £40 for rock climbing cover... I was hoping anyone knew any other companies...anyone?!

read the fine print about the max trip days carefully. Some say that if your travel goes longer than their max, then you aren't covered for any part of your trip.

I was probably unclear in my earlier post but the above link does not work in my computer...am I the only one with this problem?
Ok, good old copy&paste got me sorted and another company is:
http://www.duinsure.com
And got a quote of just £46, which is a pleasant surprise after the Post Office one:clap
Sounds ok but must read the small print though:uhoh
Oops, just to add a note after glancing through the small print...the cover is quite low for cash and baggage (up to 500GBP and up to 1500GBP respectively) for comprehensive cover, which would not cover our losses in the worst case scenario....we might take the route of NikT with no insurance:(

We have found Post Office and Walkabout very similar on 17 days cover but we need to add an additional premium to cover the value of a laptop.
The only way of cutting costs would be to go for Go Travel or Insure and Go's insurance to cover the journey and first 24hours in the country only (i.e approx half the price of 17 days cover). This leaves the problem of insuring our belongings whilst in motel/backpacker/temp accommodation
Walkabout seem to have the edge for us at the moment as they'll do 21 days cover and could extend this if we are not in more permanent accommodation by then.
So many things to think about!

Hi,
We used these people who are based in New Zealand but specialise in providing insurances from UK etc. We also had our container insurance with them.
http://www.orbitprotect.co.nz/ExperienceNZ/
I think we paid about $80 which covered a family of 4 for 8 days as this is all we needed. We paid them with a debit card
