Hi everyone,
we joined the forum in April, not sure weather to stay or go. We have now come to the conclusion if you don't try you'll never know.
just need to decide ,do we engage an immigration consultant or go it alone?
any suggestions would be greatly apprieciated.
Regards
Dave and Lisa (should we stay or should we go):)

Hi both - welcome to the forum. Engaging the services of a consultant is a really costly business and to be honest there is an absolute wealth of information on this forum. If you share a couple of your personal details, people will be able to judge whether your case is straightforward or not, and advise accordingly. There are some really complex cases on here and most people seem to find the answers.

welcome! take the plunge! From what I've seen on here you don't really need them, you can do it yourself.

well my OH is an IT M anager for a world wide company , he also has qualifications in Civil Engineering .I am a Teaching Assistant we would be taking our two children two cats and a dog if we get the chance .We have started an EOI and got 130 points but want to find employment first.
My OH has emailed cvs but we are waiting for a reply.

I agree with the others too. We could only muster 60 points, but many agents said they could get us sorted, so we thought there must be a way, we just needed to find out how. The forums have been a great help with questions I thought difficult, turns out someone or other has already "been there, done that" and offer great advice, support, and when necessary, sympathy. Initially it seems very daunting as you overload yourself with information, some you need, some you don't. As you sift through and eventually find the bits that are appropriate you can start to get a much clearer picture on the processes required.
Don't be afraid to ask, however daft or complex it may be :)

Thank you we have taken your advice on board, its just that my OH has sent cvs via email and haven't heard anything back yet ,one of these consultants have promised us they can find us employment first, and we think it would be best to do that first before taking the family over.

Take the quick test first and see how many points you get... i believe both occupations are on the skills list so you might not have an issue with getting your PR with out a job offer - IT is in high demand in NZ and once you are there OH should be able to get something quickly - Also you seem to have a better chance of getting a job if you are there already vs. just emailing your CV.

NZ employers are hesitant at best to offer jobs to people overseas that have no concrete plans to come to NZ. You may not hear anything from potential employers. Consider yourself lucky if you do.
There are some immigration expos in the UK you could try out for jobs. Not sure when as they don't come where I am at all so I don't pay much attention. :o
Another thing to try is coming over on a short visit and looking for a job then. You will probably have much better luck with employer responses. Before you do this obviously send out CVs with the dates you will be in country.
If you do decide to go the EOI->PR route once you get PR you will have lots less issues finding a job once you are approved to work in the country. With your points and skills you would be selected right away and could probably have PR in under a year barring any issues.

Hello and welcome, tons of info on here.
Most people (on here anyway) did all the emigration process themselves and managed to get through it without loss of life.

Hello and welcome to the Forum!
Completely agree with everyone about doing the immigration stuff yourself, from what you've said your situation doesn't seem too complicated and you've obviously mastered the points calculator already! ;)
In terms of finding work from overseas it can be hard to do. It was certainly the case when my IT Project Manager OH was looking for work last year. In the end we invested in just him coming out to NZ for a week to find a job - it worked, he interviewed with 8 companies and came home with 3 offers. The response from recruitment companies and employers was sooo much more positive when they saw him face to face. He was also able to say how far along the immigration process we were, ie. that we were aiming for PR which seems to make a big difference to employers.
There are a few threads on this subject and IT work in general, here are a couple you mind find useful, have a look using the Search tool and I'm sure you'll find more:

I think if you have enough points with your experience and qualifications you should start applying for PR without a job offer. You can continue to look for employment and if you are successful it will speed up your application. But as many others have said on here, employers might never respond without you being out in NZ. So at least if you have both happening it opens up all the options to you. PR can take a long time to get anyway, so if you are lucky enough to have the points without a job offer, go for it!
But of course thats just my opinion! Good luck! :nice1

Hi thank you for your reply, i have heard that about NZ Employers, think we have just taken having the qualifications and expeirience alone would swing it.:cheers
