My OH is possibly going to start working as a contractor and is thinking about employing an accountant.

I wondered how you found your accountant? Yellow Pages, web, personal recommendation?

Are you happy with them, has it worked out for you?

Found mine via personal recommendation.

They do the job I need them to do, and are a friendly crowd, so no complaints.

They are also a very small, local crew (about 6 staff) which I like as well.

They sort my GST and tax returns and will do any 'jiggery pokery' with the papertrail for earnings that go to us via our family trust too, which is a shareholder in my company.

Personal recommendation, here too.

I agree with BBB, get them to do your GST as well. It's a horrible job, and they already have most of the info needed for the end of year accounts when the time comes. It doesn't cost much extra, and the IRD are less likely to question things.
