I'm confused as to how NZIS calculate years of work experience.
I graduated with a diploma in IT in 2001, after which i work for about 4 years before i took up a degree in IT in 2005 and graduated in 2007.
Do they take into account my experience before I graduated from my degree?

Yes. The LTSSL says that you need to have a degree in computer science and 3 years of work experience in IT. Doesnt matter if you obtained your experience before or after the degree in CS.

Funnily, having work experience in IT before your degree is fine, but having 2.5 decades of experience in IT and not having a degree at all in CS/IT is a problem. Isn't it ironic?

Thank god for that..

I thought i read somewhere that NZIS does not take into account those work experience gained before getting the degree. If thats true, I only have 1 year of experience. That will take me nowhere near the border of NZ. :p

Btw, I have already submitted my EOI on 25 Aug with 125 points. Got selected on 27 Aug. :raebanana So excited! Now im so worried about getting my EOI thrown back into the pool for any reason possible.

In my thread on "Single lady looking to migrate to New Zealand...", you advised me to get my qualifications assessed. I reckon that after getting selected, it would take at least 2 months before NZIS contact me. Therefore i decided to submit the EOI 1st and get an NZQA accessment concurrently. I'm going to the tax authority in Singapore to get my backdated income tax statement as one of my work experience evidence. Afterwhich.. off goes my envelope to NZQA. *Finger cross* ;) Hope they would assess my degree as level 7. If not i may have a big problem.

Wow 2.5 decades of IT experience.. Yes, as ironic as it is, I guess probably whoever sets the rule had no idea how much more valuable experience is as compared to a degree (Which is nothing but a piece of paper). But hang on... i thought they have a new rule that at least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification??

Yes, I fell down that trap too... maddening. Not to mention just how out of date that degree would be by now!

A lot of people seem to have read both the clauses you stated above, but when it comes to finding official documentation, it somehow isnt there. Its probably just an urban legend as Beater suggested. But if you do find something official on those lines, please, please post it here. It would do a world of good to Beater and Maxx.

If this is just for NZQA, it will have no value addition. Just a letter from your previous employers would do.

NZQA does not assess your work experience, just your qualifications. So, in essence, if you declared that after your degree in IT, you just sat at home and did nothing, your degree would still get the same level 7.

Your tax records would come in handy when you supply documents along with your ITA for claiming work experience points.

Oh i see, what kind of letter is required? I do not have any letters from my previous employers stating my job description.

I only have the below:
1. Appointment confirmation letter and end of service confirmation letter from the 1st company (Job title as Programmer)
2. Two 2 years contract signed with my current employer (My job description was not stated on it but job title is Software engineer)
3. Some payslips
4. Backdated income tax statement from 2003 to 2008
5. Salary increment letter.

During the ITA stage..would the above be enough to prove the work experience which im claiming for?

Yes, those should do, but a letter from your current and previous employers stating your dates of employment, employee id [for easy tracking just in case HR/your manager has changed], job title, profile and the name and contact information of person signing the document should clinch the deal. It will be an all-in-one info document. The job profile is important, just a job title such as Programmer, Analyst wont do.

I take it that both your employers are in Singapore, so you could contact your HR or your manager for such a reference letter.

Hi nankris,

Thanks for the info. Will contact my ex-employers for the reference letter once i receive my ITA (Hopefully it does comes..), but for current employer, since i do not wish to inform them about my plan to migrate, i think it would be difficult for me to get the letter without informing them about my plan.:no
