I am almost too embarrassed to write this post ... but what the hell!

The last five/six weeks I have popped along to the Oxfam shop every Monday morning before it opens and before the dustbin men get there. Out on the pavement is the most incredible waste I have ever seen - bags and bags of clothes, toys, lamps, shelves, pictures, furniture ... and suitcases. If there is someone in the shop I will knock on the door and donate a pound or two, otherwise I help myself.

Have seven suitcases by this method so far. All in excellent condition. It is shocking what these shops throw away.

That's called 'scuttering' .... well it is where I come from.

Waste not want not ... that's what I say.

Glenda, sorry love it is not waste left out by the shop for the dustmen - it is in fact stuff donated there over the weekend, when the shop is closed.

Having second thoughts now, you never know where those camera's are ;)

Actually, Debenhams do a nice line in suitcases as well, just need to chuck a brick through the window and remember to wear a balaclava for the CCTVs. :cool

Heh, Glenda, could you get me a VCR and a car stereo next time you're out "shopping"? This Oxfam, wasn't in Liverpool by any chance was it? :laugh :laugh :clap

Glenda

Hey hey hey !!!!

It IS rubbish. It has blue 'trade refuse' tapes on and I've stood behind the blinking dustcart and chatted to the dustbin man!!!! I've even been given the OK by the lady in the charity shop.

So stop picking on me!!! ;) ;) ;)

You're all just jealous!!! :laugh

I'll look out for you! ;) ;) ;) There was an electronic typewriter the other day ... trouble is we don't want any more stuff for the container. :no

I was not picking, lol, I was just imagining myself in exact the same situation :laugh
When I get on my bicycle certain mondays around here, there's so much stuff for the recylce shop at the street corners! Before we decided to move to NZ I have been seen to stop and stare at particular good looking items. ;) One day I found twin brothers of our kitchen cabinet doors, even tho ours were still in mint condition, I loaded them up and took them home. And now 6 years later they come in handy, cause one of our doors is damaged, so we got a spare one in the shed :laugh

Keep an eye out for freshly filles skips Glenda. They are nearly always good for a scavenge about.
I hear the kiwis are pretty handy at finding and making use of other folks "rubbish", so you are getting in some good practise. Go for it. :nice1

oooh! That's terrible!!!!!!!!!!!
Glenda I hope you've got a good sense of humour!!

I must admit - have chucked a few suitcases that way myself over the years but most of them had some part of them broken eg zips etc.
So be careful!
:nice1

Love you too, Iain.

Actually, apart from the grey hair it is quite flattering especially if you consider that I am possibly grave-robbing :eek :eek :eek - as it would not surprise me if the suitcases come from people who have died. Well ... if they are in perfect condition (one was designer!) obviously someone did not need it anymore, for some reason.

Talking about graves ... wonder if I am digging one for myself on this thread? :? :angel :laugh :laugh :laugh

Glenda just think there's some times those that hide their millions, ok thousands, in a suitcase. :cool
Never mind the others, we might find gold one day, you in the suitcases, and me in the kitchen cabinets ;)

Nice to see Iain has come out with an out of date, stereotypical joke about Liverpool :no

Point of order Iain, it is in bad taste and wears just a bit thin!
Suggest a look at the crime statistics.... :booby

Haven't found any millions. :no :no :no The charity shop fills the cases with rubbish and bits and pieces - coat hangers, kids dolls, jigsaw puzzles, etc. Looking out for antiques now (thanks Gran). ;) There was a brand new PC keyboard in its box the other week which was not compatible with my Packard Bell ... should have offered it to the forum and then counted the PMs. :P

Awwwww Iain,

You didn't have to remove the piccy ... honestly, I really was not insulted. :no If I was, you would have received a colourful PM, or I would have sent a couple of my new dustbin men friends around to see you. :eek

My compliments you guys, I've been reading on a dutch NZ forum too, but since they were always about to cut eachothers throats because of differences in opinion and the words used at each other were getting worse and worse, I decided to quit participating there, cause that gets very depressing. Then when I see how people react to eachother here, it's... great! :nice1
