Furnished Houses to rent??anywhere?

Hi all,

This is my first post!!yippee!..

So my Oh and i moving over in Oct and are finding it next to impossible to find furnished houses to rent.

Any furnished house we find is a good $100 more per week then an unfurnished house in the greater Hamilton region - we thinking of Te Awamutu or Cambridge at the moment.

We are anxious to have a house organised before we arrive in October- do you think this is a good idea? We dont want to have to stay in hotels until we get organised and we'd rather go over with house/job and as much as possible organised in advance.

We found this to be a real problem in Auckland also. Next to no furnished houses for rent advertised and the ones that were were expensive or not in the area we wanted to be.

We ended up renting unfurnished and renting a few basics (sofa, armchair, dining room set, fridge freezer, bed for DS, chest of drawers) from DTR (www.DTR.co.nz) and buying some cheap bits from The Warehouse (set of china etc). I also sent out two large boxes via Fedex as OH arrived before I did. Several Forumites have been successful renting un-furnished and borrowing from friends/neighbours/relations or buying cheap stuff off Trademe. Its amazing what you'll put up with in terms of 'basic living' once you actually get to NZ as the 'journey' to get here has usually been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride! :roll

HTH and good luck with your house search.

Hi Ellie

Welcome to the forum.

I'd be a little wary of taking contract on a house before you've seen it. I had been checking out trademe for a good 6 months before we moved. But some of the photos were extrememly misleading and the first three houses we saw were absolute dives. In contrast, the house we took had dreadful photo's online. It's actually quite nice, if very cold.

We stayed in a serviced apartment for two weeks on arrival which wasn't too expensive and had cooking/laundry facilities and most importantly, internet.

Good luck

Julie

Agree.....the are some complete holes advertised for rent that are made to sound/look like mini palaces online. I would also make sure you take the time to look out for tell tale signs for damp/mould before agreeing on any rental property as well as considering insulation/heating......you just can't get a feel for this from pictures.

We are currently in a 4 bedroom fully furnished (including linen) place in Glenview , Hamilton. The rent is $400/wk (which OH company is paying for the 1st month). We have been looking at other 4 bedroom places to rent long term and they are usually around $300-340/wk in the suburbs we are looking at. We have also seen some fully furnished or partly furnished places in Hamilton.

We're planning on just showing up with our suitcases, renting whatever we can find, then garage-saling or whatever for everything. If we end up sleeping on the floor a week or two, then that's part of the adventure. The kids are prepared. ;)

When my OH was coming over to the UK so that we could get the 12 months living together requirement.

He put his house with the local agents & he was told that you never rent property furnished because you would struggle to get insured for it. Which his insurance confirmed that his policy would skyrocket if he did it furnished. So he had to store all of his furnishing apart from white goods, because they could stay.

In the end the agent didn't do their job & they wanted him to drop his shared of the rent, so his friend took the property on for him, unforntunately his friend ended up in ICU, so OH had to rush back to NZ, because there was no-one to look after the dog or house.

Fortunately his friend survived but is still unwell in Wellington Hospital.

I hope you have success finding furnished rentals :D
