Feilding or Marton???

Can anyone help?

I will shortly be starting work in Palmerston North and my husband in Wanganui. In terms of commute and lifestyle would it be better for us to live in Feidling or Marton?

We have been in NZ a week (AND LOVING IT). We have been to Feilding and think it is a really nice little town. We have a rental lined up for the short term there from next week and we have an option to build on Mount Taylor on the outskirts of Feilding which we really love and is just what we are looking for.

The commute for me is fine but all the auto routes and google earth suggest at least an hour's commute each way for hubby to Wanganui from Feilding. Everyone we have spoken to say that's rubbish and it is about 30 to 40 mins max.

We are going to Feilding tomorrow and will do the drive to Wanganui. We haven't visited Marton yet and will probably do that on the way back but I thought it worth seeing if anyone on the blog had any views or first hand knowledge.

Can't help with the commuting distance - but I can offer one piece of advice - we did look at living in Feilding, make sure you check out how much the rates are - they seemed to very expensive compared to Palmy - so maybe it would be the same if you compare marton and Feilding - just something to consider! :)

HTH a bit!

Ok Just been and asked kev how long it took us to get to Wanganui from our house - and towing a trailer it was an hour (and we live at the far side of Palmy!) So perhaps the advice was somewhere near - your best bet is to try it, at the times when your OH would be driving on a normal day.

Hi there,

It's around 5 minutes from Fielding to Sanson and around a further 5 minutes to Bulls.

From there it's 15 minutes (22km) to Turakina and then a further 15 minutes (22km) to Wanganui.

So you're definately looking at around 40-45 minutes, depending on traffic, but certainly not an hour!

Marton offers a slightly more even commuting distance. From there to Wanganui takes around 25 minutes, and to Palmy it's around 30 minutes.

All the best

Sorry I can't answer you, but your title caught my eye. My family's last name is Marton...I think that's a sign:yes...our move shall be fortuitous! :cheers

Thanks everyone. Did the commute today and it was about 45 mins. I wouldn't want to do it but OH is the one who would have to and he feels quite happy. He's had longer commutes in the UK with far less appealing scenery and far more traffic.

Haven't seen Marton yet but that would give me the longer commute and we have fallen in love with the Mount Taylor building plot. Rates apparently are about half of the normal Feilding rates as Mount Taylor is classed as rural even though it is only a couple of minutes from town.

Saw the Mount Taylor area, over a year ago, with another friend who was looking out there for a section (not a plot thats what they bury people in - have to get the lingo right! :D)

Seemed to be a nice area. Good luck! :nice1

Suitably reprimanded. Builder and real estate agent have said the same thing depsite the fact that all their paperwork refers to us buying 'plot 321'. Maybe I ought to double check it is actually a piece of land to build a house on that I am buying !!!!!!!
