So I figured I can't be the only person having issues figuring out where to buy stuff so I thought I'd start a whole thread

Can anyone tell me where's the best place to buy grills? We prefer charcoal, and thus far the selection has been dismal- but we're not sure where to look.

Thanks

You need to shop around when there are sales on - Briscoes, Smiths City, The Warehouse, Mitre 10, Bunnings all have a wide selection.

What you need, are some old bricks from Trademe, a grill pan and a grill - mix with a sunny Sunday and a few beers and voila - a bbq :nice1

after 14 months of searching in auckland, I have given up and am going to buy a gas BBQ.

It feels completely against my man instincts of "make fire, cook food - eat food" but we have a small charcoal one and the charcoal stuff isnt the same and it takes ages to get going properly - far longer than my charcoal BBQ back in the uk

Not sure I can handle the mickey taking that my dad will give me when he is over at christmas but I might hang on to the charcoal one and let him have a go to see how hard it is :yes

We are used to charcoal but got told are not that popular out here so have gone for a gas, must admit it's a lot easier, now can't wait for the weather to turn :)

It's easier- but I like the flavour that grilling with charcoal gives.

If my husband's very good I might buy him the Weber One Touch Gold from The BBQ Factory (http://www.bbqfactory.co.nz/Barbecues/Charcoal_Barbecues.htm) one day...

You could make your own charcoal! I used to do this at work in an old oil drum. I'll see if I can find any step-by-step info, as it's not that difficult, just a bit time consuming. And mucky :D

Can you get chimney starters in NZ?

I'm looking online but can't find anything and am thinking maybe they're known by another name.

Here you go:

If you scroll down the page, there's step-by-step instructions for DIY charcoal.

Everything you ever wanted to know about charcoal making but were afraid to ask.....

http://www.pyrosociety.org.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=826

The UK just had to have a society dedicated to setting things on fire and blowing things up. :D

Go on - have a go - you know you want to. It's great fun, if a bit messy. Just make sure your neighbors aren't too close......:)

Mitre 10 and Briscoes sell them

You will get more than a blank look if you ask for a BarBQue rather than a grill though.

The gas ones work well.

Does anyone know where I can buy some picture mounts for inside photo frames. I tried The Warehouse in Rangiora but no luck....

We bought one at the BBQ Factory in Lower Hutt & that's what it was called. It was the last one in stock & the sales guy seemed to think we were dinosaurs for using a charcoal grill :roll

Our gas oven finally died yesterday after a lingering decline; the advice we got on it and our gas cooktop is that they're not repairable (too old so can't get parts, sigh)

"Kitchens n' Things" is always running big ads in the paper but I've never checked them out since we've only had to buy a washing machine so far. Anybody tried them or have an opinion on which of the chains has the best prices? Any thoughts on a good reasonably priced brands? I looked wall ovens up on consumer.org & they recommend simpson/westinghouse models FWIW.
