Hi Guys,

I know this is probably a dead easy one but I've done some searching and cant find the easy answer.
My OH, DD and myself have applied for PR under the skilled migrant catergory with him as the main applicant.
Does this mean that when (If.....!!) we get to NZ that I will be allowed to work too? Or do I need to apply for a work permit or something when I'm there?
I havn't got anything specific in mind - I just would like to have at least the option of working!

Thanks in advance

Claire

You will automatically get same same PR visa as OH, with same conditions i.e. that main applicant does the 3 months in relevent job within the first 7 months of arriving.....you send in evidence (letter from employer or payslips to get this condition removed once you're done it). You on the other hand can get any job you want :)

Excellent - thank you!
Not that I'm wanting to rush out and immediatly grab any job I can - I just thought that when my daughter is settled at school and I started to crave adult conversation it might be nice to have that option open. Thanks again!

I'm still new at all this so keep finding out stuff on this forum that I didn't know about (which is why I think this is a great forum). So, a few questions:

1. I've gathered that once the ITA has been submitted and approved you get the Permenant Residence visa (PR) which is actually blue stickers in your passport. Is that right? or is PR something that you get later? if so what are the blue stickers?

2. Once you've got that, how soon to you have to arrive in NZ? My OH has to give 3 months notice (I think) and we don't want to give up a job till we are 100% sure that NZ will have us.

3. From what I read above my OH (the primary applicant) will be able to work in NZ and must complete 3 months in a relevant job in the first 7 months we are in the country.
3a what happens if he doesn't (apart from us having no money except the rental income from home)
3b when he has, who is he sending the payslips to and what happens then?

4. Again from what I've read above, I can work (just as well because I had promised to contribute to the household income if I could) and there are no restrictions on this?
4a Do I also have to do so many months and then send evidence somewhere?

Sorry for all the dumb questions.

1. I believe so, still haven't got my blue stickers, but once you have them, you can go!

2. You have 3 months to take up your job if you have a job offer.
You have a year from the date of issue of a PR to arrive in NZ without a job offer.

3. This depends on your PR. If you have a job offer, you must take up the offer within 3 months of getting your PR and must stay there for 3 months. However, if you don't have a job offer (your OH does not from what you say) there are no extra conditions (you had to jump through those hoops to get the PR without a job offer). You just get a job when you can. (thats how I read it).

Says it all here:
http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/skilledmigrant/accepted/default.htm

4. Only the main applicant has to show evidence, and only if they used a job offer as a reason to get into NZ. The job offer route is much quicker, looking at 7-12 months wait without a job offer!!

Thanks JandL, that's really useful. OH doesn't have a job offer at the moment but is going to the Expo in Olympia next month armed with several copies of his CV. Fingers crossed!

I went to the Olympia Expo and didn't find anything of interest in the IT field. It was mostly construction, nursing and teaching. The one stand that seemed to do the "other" stuff seemed to be an agency and they had a queue the length of the whole place as only 1 person was working on it. Get there early!

Just to back this up - I was also at the last expo at Olympia - and was SOOOOOO disappointed. Absolutely nothing there apart from enginneering and nursing on job front. I printed out 15 CV's and stood in a queue for an hour to give it to the recruitment consultant (who knew nothing about my specialised IT field) and have never heard anything back from them.

There were loads of people who wanted to move your pension and money, ship across goods and sell V.V.V expensive houses when compared to realestate.co.nz, and the NZ immigration people were there.

I actually complained as I felt it had been mis-represented as a jobs show and have been given free tickets to the next event. We are now at the point when it might be useful with practical aspects of moving and having at chat to immigration officials, so will be going, but unless you work in fields mentioned above, don't hold out much on the job front!

Cheers,
gbFunk

Just to say that my OH went to two Expos in London both were at Olympia (I think) and the one held in October 2006 was WAY better than the one held in the early part of 2007 (March IIRC). He got the impression that a lot of employers only have resources/budget to attend one and most focus on the one held in October. He also works in IT and picked up a few useful contacts and gave out a few copies of his CV.

Obviously this could have changed since 2006/early 2007 but thought I'd chuck in my tuppence worth.
